5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest game in existence!, July 22, 2003
By
This review is from: WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain (Video Game)
I had the honour of being one of the first to play Smackdown 5: Here Comes The Pain at a press event in London on 2nd July 2003. THQ have really listened to fans, and produced, in my opinion, possibly the greatest wrestling game of all time!

This isn't just a run of the mill sequel. Yes, over 60 of the latest superstars, themes and storylines are included. THQ have impressively gone step further and completely redesigned key areas of the game, to increase realism. For example, wrestlers can now inflict area specific damage. Get put in too many ankle locks, and your wrestler is going to be limping for the rest of the match. The damage doesn't stop there however. Too many bumps to the head and you will be busted open, with blood flooding down your face. The graphics have been given an overhaul, and feature impressive lighting, pyro and effects. The crowd has finally made the jump from 2d to 3d.

The grappling system has been redesigned, offering 4 different styles of grapple. This means that each wrestler can perform 16 different grapples, compared to Smackdown: Shut Your Mouth's 4.

In addition to having the latest roster, including Goldberg, Scott Steiner, Rey Mysterio, John Cena and many others, THQ has also included 'WWE Legends' to the game. Old favorates such as the Ultimate Warrior, Ted Dibiase, Legion of Doom, Rowdy Roddy Piper, and Nikolai Volkoff will be welcome additions to old school wrestling fans.

There have also been some exciting match additions added. 3 of my favorates are The Elimination Chamber (a steel dome designed for 5 people), First Blood (Make your opponent bleed to win!) and also Bra and Panties ( strip off your opponant to her underwear to win!). All match types from previous games are still present, including Hell in a Cell, Steel Cage, and TLC.

The redesigned season mode will contain stories from the past year in the WWE, as well as classic storylines, and ones written especially for the game. The free-roaming feature from Smackdown 4 is gone, and has been replaced by a more accessable menu based system.

There are a number of new backstage areas, including a gym. Here you can use various items such as dumbbells, and even a running machine to inflict damage on your opponents!

In conclusion, this is a must-own game for wrestling and beat-em-up fans. The game of the year, buy it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars The No Mercy killer!, September 2, 2003
By
14 year-old gamer (somewhere in the world) - See all my reviews
This review is from: WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain (Video Game)
No Mercy was the best game ever made. The graphics weren't that good but the gameplay filled in for it, and it has been on the throne for years. But not for long.
This game has everything you have ever imagined:
1)Legends, including Old School Taker, Ted Di Biase etc.
2)BLOOD! If you keep hiting them on the head and damage that body part BLOOD will come out of their head.
3)Weight detection. For Example Spike Dudley can't lift the Big Show and if they try to they won't be able to lift and they'll hurt their back.
4)Body specific damage. Now you can work on a specific body part. There's a shape by the name bar that represents your wrestler and if you work on let's say back the color of the back (in the little shape) will change from blue to green, to orange, to red. When a body part is in red than the wrestler will hold that specific body part in pain.
5)Season. Every wrestler has his own unique season so that you never get bored playing it. You start with low stats and as you keep winning matches you earn money which you can use on upgrading your stats or buy unlockables at the Shopzone.
6)New match types. There are new matches like Elimination Chamber, Bra and Panties and First Blood.
7)New wrestlers. It has 65 wrestlers including Goldberg, Rey, Ultimo Dragon, Haas and Benjiamin etc.
8)Better graphics. The graphics are better this time. T^eh body tone is better and the wrestlers look like real selves.
9)New backstage areas. There are now 17 available arenas and there are bigger, more interactive areas and there's also 3D crowd.

Well what can I say. This game is going to blow all the other games out of the water. If you're wrestling fan this is a must for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Smackdown! game to come out!!!!, July 9, 2003
By
nick (mississippi) - See all my reviews
This review is from: WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain (Video Game)
Get ready, cause this will be the best Smackdown! game to come out! But this is not just an opinion. This is 100 percent true. Here, let me explain:

In a press coference held overseas in England by THQ, they explained how much of an improvement WWE SMACKDOWN! HERE COMES THE PAIN will be compared to the other four games. Really they aren't improvements though, because after listening to consumer and press feedbacks the makers decided they would overhaul the entire game design from top to f'ing bottom. I'm sure these guys will get a lot of credit for the effort they have put into this new Smackdown! game. Now, it may seem like I know a lot about this new game. I do.

Here's what to expect:

Four different types of grappling move sets tailored to that specific grapple (power move set, submission move set, quick move set, and signature move set).
Four moves out of each grapple based on superstar's real life moves
New two-button countering system
Deeper gameplay experience, more move sets and more strategy
Who you pick really matters....superstars will each have unique strengths and weaknesses based on speed, power, strength, and technical abilities
Weight detection....no more picking up Big Show with Spike Dudley.
Apply damage to specific body parts of your opponent to wear him down and eventually make him submit
New tug-of-war battling system interface; see your opponent desparately try to get to the ropes as you apply even more pressure.
A new reaction system so your superstars really sell to the moves put on them
See all the new moves available to your disposal to inflict pain on your opponent
A complete overhaul of the graphics engine; each superstar will now look almost exactly like their real life self
3D crowd
Blood
Build your superstars attributes with five core strengths
New original storyline
New money earning system with many unlockables
Key problems with the season mode addressed
Redesign of sound, camera angles, and special effects will give for a great sounding and looking experience
Superstar voiceovers
New fully interactive backstage enviroments take the action outside the rind to unparalled situations
MORE THAN 60 SUPERSTARS INCLUDING ALL THE TOP TALENT
BRA AND PANTY MATCH...A WHOLE NEW EXPERIENCE!!!
THE ELIMINATION CHAMBER HAS ARRIVED
FIRST BLOOD MATCH
FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER IN A WWE VIDEOGAME........LEGENDS!!!

THQ want not just to improve on the series, but redefine it.

Now, with all this haven been said, you probably understand why I give it 5 stars (even when considering that it hasn't been released yet and I therefore have not played it).

So if you are tired of all these great WWE games coming out on GameCube and X box then just sit back and wait, until I think this fall/winter, for WWE SmackDown! Here Comes The Heat (a game that will live up to its title) on PS2!

I hope this is helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than raw and wrestlemania, September 8, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain (Video Game)
Many reviewers haven't actually played this game, just how good it looks, well i have at Playstation Experience (event with future released games) I t was awesome. The graphics are great with authentic quality entrances.
It wasn't fully complete when i played it, so i could only do a single match. I was goldberg, my friend Brock. It was great, the automatic replays for big moves and finishers were so cool.
I've heard that at the beginning of a season, you get to chose who's on which show, and if they're a face or heel. In the official playstation mag it said there's the create a belt mode(wicked) and create a ppv. I can't wait to get this game, the weight sensors and blood was great. As soon as here comes the pain is out, i'm gonna get it!

= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain (Video Game)
I hate wrestling games.

Ever since the days of N64 companies have been making wrestling games, and they all sucked. There was nothing redeemable about them. Granted, at the time, they were marvels; but times change, and yesterdays marvels are todays forgotten piles of junk. I vowed to myself never to waste money on any type of wrestling game ever. Then my friend made me play this one.

There are so many good things about this game it's impossible to list them all at once. It's not perfect, granted, but it's the closest any wrestling game has gotten so far. Even if you are not a wrestling fan you should pick this up, it's on my list of top ten favorite games. There's so many things to do, so much fun to be had with friends and alone and you can pin somebody without having to use every finger on both hands.

Go get this game, right now. You won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best games I've ever played., April 12, 2004
This review is from: WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain (Video Game)
I got this game the week it came out. It wasn't easy finding it, but I did. I was so excited, but then I wondered if it was gonna be a let down, like alot of people said it was. Well, lucky for me, it was far from it. This game is as the title of my review says. I haven't played any of the SmackDown! games since, and barely any other games at that.

The graphics are amazing, and some of the best graphics I've seen in any game. There are more then 50 superstars to choose from, and more match types in Exhibition mode then any of the other games. There's single, tag team, six-man tag, handicap, hardcore, Royal Rumble, survival, and Main Events. The one thing missing was King of the Ring, but that's minor. The Main Events include 3 Stages of Hell, Bra & Panty, Elimination Chamber, Elimination Tag, First Blood, Hell in a Cell, Iron Man, Ladder, Last Man Standing, Lumber Jack, Slobber Knocker, Special Referee, Submission, Table, and TLC! So, there's more then enough there to keep you occupied for hours. The only thing about this game that took some getting used to was the controls. A few of them are switched around, and the moves are kind of different, but after a few times, you start to get used to it. I just recommend that if you have and of the other SmackDown! games, don't play them! I did, and I forgot all of the controls! I sucked :(

Season mode is awesome! I actually enjoy it! This time around, you get to choose who's on what brand, who's face or heel, and of course, who you get to be. Season isn't easy this time around, and you start off at the bottom of the pack. You have to work your way up to the top, and that won't be easy. Also, season is pretty hard with a created superstar. This time around, during season, you earn SmackDown! Dollars as a reward for winning matches, and these can be used to buy ability points, and unlock thing in ShopZone. You can unlock things like Legends, create parts, moves, attires, and more.

Create mode is better then ever now. Create a Superstar is the best! You have control over every little thing, and there are so many choices. I spend hours on this! There are alot more moves to choose from in Move mode, thanks to the new and improved grappling system, which gives you 16 different front grapple moves! Create an Animation is the same as SmackDown! 4, and still boring and pointless. Create a Stable is the same to.

As for the Legends, well... They all come down to the ring in a ring, which is pretty stupid. They don't have videos or music, which sucks. But still, with Legends like old school Undertaker, you can look past that. Legends can only be unlocked in ShopZone, and are very expensive.

Well, there you have it. The best wrestling game ever made in my opinion. This is definitely the best game of the SmackDown! series.

And there. I've reviewed every SmackDown! game now.

So you are not short of wrestlers to choose from. There is also a highly detailed ring and arena to the area, all of the stadiums are so highly detailed that you might get confused between that and the real thing!
There is also loads of new and old match types to choose from.
There are Elimination Chamber, Table, TLC, Bra and Pantie, Hardcore, Ladder, Elimination Tag, Royal Rumble, First Blood, Lumber Jack, Special Referee, Slobber Knocker, Cage, Hell in a cell, Survivor, Six man Tag,Tornado Tag, Tag and a lot more I just cannot remember the rest lol. Keep in mind that you can have a triple threat ladder match and a tornado tag table match so this game will provide you with loads of things to do!

There is also a amazing season mode which is MUCH better than Wrestlemania XIX's Revenge mode because there are highly detailed story lines, 200 of them in fact and they are all written by the WWE writers, BEAT THAT WRESTLEMANIA XIX. Another part of the game i am sure you will enjoy is the Create a Wrestler feature, they have extended it greatly since SHUT YOUR MOUTH! and now you can make a wrestler almost exactly how you want it to look!

The graphics will blow you away they are so much better than WRESTLMANIA XIX'S and the same as WWWE RAW 2'S this is a good thing because i found SHUT YOUR MOUTH! slightly blocky and hard ot figure out whose who.

Another thing that is AMAZING is the entrances they will blow you away, but the only problem is, is that when you are creating a wrestler you cannot create a too good entrance.

The sound is pretty good but THQ promised us voice overs and we did not get that :( there is also no commentry! I know commentry does get annoying but it would be nice to have JR and King behind the commentry desk! But the music is O.k.

Gameplay is pretty good its simular to SHUT YOUR MOUTH! but it is easy to pick up.

I have noticed that some people have been complaining that the game is too hard, WHY DON'T YOU JUST PUT THE GAME MODE ONTO EASY!
but there we go! its good to have a challenge anyway.

All in all Smackdown is AMAZING it is not the best game around but it is by FAR the best wrestling game around. BY THIS GAME NOW!! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!

Oh yer u r probably wunderin y i am against wrestlemania XIX well its kinda coz i used 2 av it and i reeli h8ed it lol.
