If you own a "Brown Bess" than this book should be added to your library. It goes beyond a picture or two with a paragraph written below it as other books of this nature. Packed full of information (as in pages not just a paragraph)on the numerous types and models of the "Brown Bess" muskets used in North America. Even has shipping and issue dates plus the unit, etc. of the different models. This book covers a wide range of longarms and pistols to include those from Dublin Castle, Scotland, and Foreign contractors. This book helped me with information on a model "Bess" that I own and added to its allure. I have discovered that when it comes to British arms that a British author knows best compared to an American author. Same as I would believe an American author over others when it comes to American arms.

SMALL ARMS OF THE BRITISH FORCES IN AMERICA, 1664-1815
DR. DE WITT BAILEY
ANDREW MOWBRAY PUBLISHING, 2009
HARDCOVER, $59.99, PHOTOGRAPHS, 376 PAGES, ILLUSTRATIONS, GLOSSARY, APPENDICES, ABBREVIATIONS, ENDNOTES, BIBLIOGRAPHY, INDEX

From noted researcher Dr. De Witt Bailey comes this long-awaited guide to the British firearms and accoutrements carried on the battlefields of North America during the French and Indian Wars, the American Revolution, and the War of 1812. Containing chapters on Muskets, Pistols, carbines, Rifles, Wall Pieces, Ammunition, and Accoutrements, the author provides the markings and other detailed features of all the weapons used by the British Army and Royal Navy from 1664-1815. More than 400 detailed black-and-white photographs accompany this excellant text in helping the reader understand all of these fascinating weapons. Backed by forty years of research, Dr. Bailey has identified and documented long neglected and often overlooked Ordnance records which tells the reader "which regiment got what." The publication of these records has now created a whole new system for identifying and dating British weapons. The result is nothing short of spectacular and will give the reader a better understanding of the individual British soldier and sailor's relationship with the weapons they used. If you are a serious student of North American colonial warfare, a re-enactor of that time period, or just an individual interested in our country's military history, this book belongs in your library.

Ever since DeWitt Bailey came out with Pattern Dates for British Ordnance Small Arms 1718-1783 I have been eagerly awaiting the next book of the series he promised. I quickly obtained a copy of this book as soon as it came out.

I must say that I am extremely satisfied with this book. All my years of waiting I feel quite justified.

It is a remarkabe source of information for British small arms used by the english in the Americas from the colonial to Napoleonic periods. A must have for anyone interested in this period of history.

This book gives great details on all the small arms used by the British Colonies and British regular forces in North America. Anyone interested in the technical details about British arms used in North America should have this book. As with any book with this level of detail, there are some small technical problems, such as confusing names and quantities for some measures of powder charges and a missing diagram for cartridge forming sticks. The charge measure problems probably are due to the archaic measures quoted in original sources and similar names for measures of mass and volume, eg dram and drachm.
