Wodehouse captures an era that probably never was but many of us wish it had. He does one of his best jobs, capturing Twenties New York at a roar in this neatly done up farce. A true hoot, and you can't beat his use of language. Just like reading a screwball comedy, laughs come often and out loud! The Small Bachelor is not to be missed by any true afficionado of P.G. Wodehouse

The Small Bachelor is the most funny non-Jeeves story I have ever read. I would give five times five stars If I could.

This Wodehouse novel set in prohibition New York gives many a laugh and has the range of charachters which you would expect in his book - a bossy older woman and her hen pecked husband Sigsbee (a bit like Lord Elmsworth in Blandings though not as potty), an english Jeeves like Butler transplanted to america (Ferris), the usual romantic interest and, of course, theft, in this case theft of a worthless necklace. Just to give an insight into the lunacy at work in this novel, there is a hilarious exchange between Sigsbee and Molly (Sigsbee's daughter) where Molly tells him about her agreement to marry Finch:

"Well, anyway, we walked around for a while, looking at the animals, and suddenly he asked me to marry him outside the cage of the Siberian yak". "No sir exclaimed Sigsbee H with a sudden strange firmness, the indulgent father who for once in his life asserts himself. "When you get married, you'll get married in St Thomas's like any other nice girl".

That made me laugh!
