David Greenwell has a lot of expertise, and he shares it with us in a straightforward, friendly, readable style. He gives us excellent discussions of the design process, lofting, tools and materials, scarfing and butt joints, stems, transoms, knees and breasthooks. He gets most detailed of all in the chapter on sharpie construction - a good style for beginning builders. There are thorough sections on stitch and glue, plywood on frame, glued lapstrake, and strip planking building methods. The section on paints seems perfunctory, but that on glues is one of the clearest expositions of the subject I've read.The book is marred by the most typos I've seen in one place in a long time. Don't try to mark a curve using a flexible bittern - I think a batten might do a better job, and you won't get pecked. And if you find it hard to make jigs out of clipboard, try chipboard instead. It goes on. And on. And although I like David Greenwell's style, there are places where an editor's hand is glaringly lacking. The Crowood Press should be ashamed of themselves for such neglect of a really fine book. That said, after finding this book at the library, I ran right out and bought a copy. An irritating publishing job isn't going to keep me from having David at my side when I start my next boat. Over and over as I read through, I found myself saying "Hmmm, I didn't know that." "Hey, that'll make life easier next boat around." "Gee, wish I'd known that two boats ago." Lots of excellent, clear, helpful illustrations.
