Book Description

May 1, 2007

Much nautical literature focuses on the high seas, circumnavigations, big races, or great ships. Small Boats on Green Waters takes the other tack: It gathers the best writing on small boats—sailboats, canoes, kayaks, and rowboats—having grand adventures on rivers, lakes, and near shore on the ocean. This is for anyone who finds, as Ratty so famously put it, that “there is nothing—absolutely nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” Chockablock with great boating writers both classic and modern, this book will delight anyone who enjoys life on the water.

Contributors include: Arthur Ransome, Anthony Bailey, Stephen Jones, Robb White Sr., Robb White Jr., Erskine Childers, Farley Mowat, Nathaniel Bishop, John MacGregor, Wilfred Thesiger, Eric Newby, John Muir, Joe Richards, Samuel Eliot Morison, and many more!

3.0 out of 5 stars A collection of short stories: read on, August 24, 2010

This review is from: Small Boats on Green Waters: A Treasury of Good Reading on Coastal and Inland Cruising (Paperback)
You would think from the cover that this is about small sailing vessels doing interesting things. The first third of the book is about kayak/canoe trips, from the wind in the willows to other stories. The middle third of the book is a story about the war of 1812, black beard the pirate, a Mississippi riverboat, Lewis and Clark, etc. The last third are sailing stories. So quite a potporri, most well written, but many having little to do with the title of the book, small boats on green water.

This review is from: Small Boats on Green Waters: A Treasury of Good Reading on Coastal and Inland Cruising (Paperback)
Subtitle: "A Treasury of Good Reading on Coastal and Inland Cruising", and that is exactly what it is -- none of it on the raging sea. An interesting and well chosen collection of short accounts from eighteenth through twenty-first century writers, some edited to remove tedious administrative detail, others containing sufficient detail to complete a picture. This is the sort of book that one need not read through in any particular order but which can be picked up in any idle moment and returned to again and again.
