I've read a lot of value investing books including The Intelligent Investor, Security Analysis, and any book on Warren Buffett or Benjamin Graham that I could find. I thought this book overall was 98% fluff. The section on financial statement analysis was fair but still rather weak. Ian tells you to look for companies that are small, earning a profit and are growing but doesn't dig deep and cover any good examples on analyzing a specific business or company that meets the fundamentals that he discusses. It would have been very helpful if he could have covered the fundamentals then look at a couple of successful and unsuccessful examples or case studies applying the fundamentals. He does mention a few stocks that he recommended through his website that did decent but doesn't teach you well on how to do the analysis yourself. He doesn't cover much on earnings or asset valuation which I was very disappointed. I don't think he mentions anything discussing book value or digging deep into the balance sheet comparing net asset value or book value to market value. All very high level discussion with a big push to his website. Overall, I felt the book was inspirational when it comes to investing in small cap stocks but very weak on the practical application of security analysis. Price is what you pay and value is what you get. Save your money and stick to the teachings of Ben Graham whose principals are timeless. As Buffett says, "...those who read their Graham and Dodd will continue to prosper".

I have thoroughly enjoyed Ian's book, The Small-Cap Investor. As an active investor, I am always looking for new strategies that I can implement in my investment portfolio. Small-cap stocks have never been a big component of my investing strategy. However, after reading this book I realize that there is a significant opportunity to profit by investing in small cap, unknown companies. The strategies put forth in this book have provided me with the tools to successfully profit and grow my investment portfolio. Active investors who are looking for tips on how to find unknown small cap stocks on the verge of rapid growth will find this book to be a very helpful resource."

5.0 out of 5 stars This book gives you the roadmap, September 13, 2009
This review is from: The Small-Cap Investor: Secrets to Winning Big with Small-Cap Stocks (Hardcover)
I have read many books on investment strategies and count this book among the best.
Wading through all the investment sites, blogs, news channels and magazines to find
reliable and practical advice can leave your head spinning.
Ian Wyatt's book cuts to the chase with sound advice and the tools you need to find
those hidden gems amoungst the thousands of stocks available. Ian has walked the walk and has proven real-world methods for finding those stocks with great growth
prospects. He not only shows you how to do the research, but when to time your
investment and when to lock in gains for big profits.
All in all, this books will set you on the path to rewarding long-term investment
success and have fun in the process. Who doesn't want to get in on the next Dell or
Cisco in the early stages of explosive growth!

2.0 out of 5 stars A guide to investing, but only with a flavoring of small cap concepts, June 6, 2011

I wanted to like this book. Small cap investing is a terrific idea, and I was hoping this book could tell me all about. And it can... sort of. This is a book about investing, but it only has a flavoring of small cap stocks.

The bulk of this book is about fundamental analysis, technical analysis, and diversification. These are all incredibly important topics, and the author covers them in an easy-to-read style. But these chapters could just as easily be pulled out of any investment book. Fundamentals? Read The Intelligent Investor. Tech analysis? stockcharts.com's guides or Bollinger on Bollinger Bands. Diversification? Check out Robert Shiller's lecture on the subject at iTunesU for free.

All those concepts in an easy-to-read manner would be a reason for buying this book if he actually showed you how to apply it to small cap stocks. However, he doesn't. What's more, the most small-cap-centric chapter, on how to find good candidates, speaks in generalizations and uses large cap stocks for examples!

If you're a complete novice to investments, this might be a good book for you. For everyone else, skip it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short and to the Point, March 7, 2011

This review is from: The Small-Cap Investor: Secrets to Winning Big with Small-Cap Stocks (Hardcover)
I purchased this book because I wanted to learn more about investing in small caps. I knew of the potential upside, and along with that, there is also a very large potential downside. I got this book to better hedge my investment choices to better my chances of picking winners.

My first impression was WOW what a small book. The cover price of this book is $27.95, and at only 157 pages I was a little put off. At this price, there better not be any filler or fluff material.

Well I was in luck, there wasn't much. If you can stomach the author's ego that is very well written into this book, you will find the information in this book is well worth the price. This is a solid tier 1 investment book, by tier 1 what I mean is that is covers the fundamentals, and covers them very well.

This books is pretty much common sense, but common sense written in a style that may enlighten you into new ways of thinking about investing. You won't find any mind-blowing new ways to value companies, or hidden tricks to discovering potential big winners, but what you will get out of this book is a solid understanding of small cap investing.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is just getting started with investing and wants to get a better understanding of small caps and what to look for when investing in them.
This book is well worth your time and money, if not in picking the perfect winner, in possibly avoiding picking a big stinker.

4.0 out of 5 stars A how-to book for new investors, February 9, 2010
By
This review is from: The Small-Cap Investor: Secrets to Winning Big with Small-Cap Stocks (Hardcover)
I never read investment books and have never bought or sold a stock. However, this book provides a strong case for why investors should include small-cap stocks in their portfolio. Wyatt uses interesting quotes and a clear style to inform readers about the fundamentals involved in investing. The book was more interesting and better written at the beginning but still provides a novice with enough information to establish a strong base for someone to get more involved.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Sensible Advice, October 19, 2009

I am still reading the book, but I like it, and I particularly like the fact that it seems grounded in reality, with no get rich quick promises. I am a relative beginner in the stock market, but this book has given me confidence to make what have already turned out to be several profitable trades. I would say this is not a book for someone looking for easy money with no effort, but rather a very sensible guide for someone willing to study out how to make money in the stock market. It is easy to understand and just good, sensible guidance for a disciplined approach to investing. I am particularly interested in small caps, so the title got my attention, but I think much of the guidance would apply whether trading in small caps or other categories of securities, so I think it is a valuable read for anyone trading in the stock market.

I am new to the stock market and have always been intimidated by books about investing. I found this book an entertaining, easy to understand and most importantly an educational introduction into an innovative and profitable section of the stock market. The book does a great job of walking me through the evaluation and selection process in easy to understand yet insightful ways. I will definitely reference this book as the financial markets continue to rebound and unfold over the next year.

This review is from: The Small-Cap Investor: Secrets to Winning Big with Small-Cap Stocks (Hardcover)
Great book - I learned a lot about small cap investing from this book.
You hear a lot about the big guys, but there's not much on how to research the smaller companies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read into small caps, November 12, 2009

I enjoyed reading this book particularly because I could read it on the commuter rail to and from work but it is a great book overall focusing on an area that most investors don't realize, the potential rewards of small cap investing. Ian goes into great detail explaining in simple terms how to read company financials. I would recommend this book to any longterm investor or day trader.
