Book Description

May 5, 2009

They watch our every move, study our habits, judge our moods, and time our activities. They plot elaborate subterfuges to manipulate us into doing their bidding and trick us into participating in their nefarious schemes. They charm us into loving them. They are our dogs.

Genevieve, a brilliant seven-pound papillon who dares to break the canine code of silence, invites you into the inner sanctum of dogdom in this hilarious exposé about what dogs really think of their people. In her bitingly funny memoir, Genevieve reveals canine secrets never before shared with humans while also passing on her devious tricks-of-the-trade to her legions of furry pupils.

In Small Dog, Big Life, Genevieve sinks her teeth into such topics as driving tips for dogs, the tragedy of doorbells in TV commercials, measuring the intelligence of humans, finding a reason for cats, how prehistoric dogs saved the caveman's bacon, converting your house into an agility course, and productive kitchen behavior. Throughout, Genevieve unleashes a scathing analysis of human culture that will have sociologists all over the world looking for new jobs, while inspiring canines everywhere to rise up and assume their rightful places as heads of the household.

Insightful, entertaining, and peppered with sophistication, wit, and charm, Small Dog, Big Life is not only for animal lovers of all ages but for anyone who appreciates an ironic sense of humor. And, ultimately, through Genevieve's "words," it is a celebration of the wondrous and loving relationship between dogs and their people.

More About the Author

Dr. Dennis Fried has been laughed out of numerous careers, including stand-up comedy. He has advanced degrees in physics and philosophy, all of which have gone totally to waste. He is extremely lazy, and if it weren't for his author-dog, Genevieve, he probably wouldn't get out of bed until suppertime.

4.0 out of 5 stars Every Dog should Study this book ..., August 12, 2009
By
Itsy Bitsy (The Back Yard) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Small Dog, Big Life: Memoirs of a Furry Genius (Hardcover)
Genevieve's Dad has done an awesome job of translation in this book, without pulling a single thing about the proper training of owners. Go Genevieve!

My Mom read it to me, and when I suspected she skipped the best parts, I dragged the book under the bed and read it after she was asleep. Genevieve is my newest heroine.

So, why did I only give this book 4 Stars. Well, in spite of the fact that Genevieve looks a lot like me, she was highly critical of chihuahuas saying that they were appropriate for showing in Taco commercials. I could not let such slander against my breed go unchallenged. I suggest that before her next book, Genevieve watch Beverly Hills Chihuahuato get a true respresentation of my breed.

Otherwise, I enjoyed every page. I hope her next book comes with Dog Treats packaged in with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genevieve Rocks!, July 18, 2009

Anyone who owns a dog or is considering acquiring one should read this book. Genevieve shares great insight into the obviously superior mind of a dog. Her tips and secretes have truly helped me become a better human companion. I laughed until I cried at her stories of what canines put up with daily. She is truly delightful and as a bonus, she's so cute!

5.0 out of 5 stars Settle back with a bowl of water and a good chew toy, June 13, 2009
This review is from: Small Dog, Big Life: Memoirs of a Furry Genius (Hardcover)
I'm usually suspicious of books barktated to humans without assistance from experienced canilinguists, but Dr. Fried seems eminently qualified and adept at putting Genevieve's deep thoughts into layman's words. While the well-known translations into Great Dane, Chihuahua, and Cocker Spaniel are meticulously faithful to the unique colloquialisms of puppy patter, Dr. Fried's edition takes a more scholarly approach, and I must say Genevieve expresses herself eloquently and humorously in this less-advanced mode of communication (English). Fried has gotten the star to open up and divulge celebrity life away from the bright lights and paparazzi; indeed, the reader will gratefully share the doghouse (bring your own newspaper) and beg for scraps from Genevieve's table of gossip. A hilarious gift for dog lovers and anyone who likes to laugh!
