5.0 out of 5 stars Small Dolls of the 40s and 50s by Carol J. Stover, September 19, 2002

This review is from: Small Dolls of the 40s and 50s Identification and Value Guid (Hardcover)
As a longtime doll collector, I have often found 8-inch hard plastic dolls that I could not identify. Some of the dolls were even mint with original clothes. I always passed them by thinking that I would never be able to learn about the companies that made them. This "Small Dolls" book will go a long way to answer these kinds of questions. The author has written a great book with lots of excellent illustrations, which includes pictures and information of the more well-known dolls like Ginny, Ginger and Muffie. In addition, dolls are pictured from over 50 other doll companies, including Norma Originals, Unique, Virga, Carlson Manufacturing and many more. For collectors who like small dolls, especially those from the 1950s, this book is a must.

Collectors of small dolls from the 50's have been waiting for this book!! With great attention to detail, Carol Stover covers the dolls of 47 different companies of the time period, plus extras, like advertising dolls. Marked and unmarked dolls are carefully described and amply illustrated with many, many color photos of each type. Copies of old advertising brochures are also included. This thorough, comprehensive, well-researched book deserves a place on every collectors shelf!

What a massive undertaking!! Explores dolls that have been ignored in other books. Look at all the never-before-seen pictures, then go back and read every word. Then, go back & look & read it again & again. Simple explainations & descriptions. Great job - keep the books coming!

Carol Stover has done it again! This is definitely "The Book" for 2002 and a valuable resource for any collector of small dolls from the 40's and 50's! Packed full of information, comparisons, identification characteristics, estimated values, and the history of both popular and little known dolls of that time period. Lots of wonderful colored photos with close-ups showing doll faces, arm hooks, feet, body shapes and outfits. This is the first book I've found that identifies all the look-alikes for dolls such as Ginger, Pam, and Virga. A true A to Z guide that answers so many questions about these wonderful dolls!

With so many small dolls' characteristics to unravel, Carol Stover has done a fantastic job! Photos of very good examples abound with very detailed descriptions. Love the many original catalog and ad pictures, too. Love the large size of this book and especially appreciate the 'Comparions' chapter to start the task of identifying a doll in one's collection. Hoping this book brings even more examples out of hiding for the next book she does! The buzz is out that we small dolls collectors now have a resource book to access.

Collectors of Ginny type dolls have needed a book like this, with all color photographs, detailed doll comparisons, and information about some of the more obsure companies. I was able to identify one of my favorite dolls: an unmarked but mint-in-box "Pam" type. It was made by the Stashin Doll Company of Newark, NJ. Thanks, Carol Stover!
