This is an OK book for someone who is just beginning to repair medium size riding lawnmower engines. Experienced mechanics will find little in the book that they do not already know. Understand that, as one would expect from the title, small chain saw, weed eater, leaf blower, and push mower engines are not covered. The information is limited, pretty elementary and lacking enough detail to help an experienced repair person making major repairs or difficult diagnostics. The number of different brands of engines covered is limited.

I own a couple of repair manuals and this one isn't the best. I'm not much of a mechanic and don't find working with engines easy to do, as do many guys. Thus I've been looking for an engine repair manual which will take me through every step necessary in order to maintain and repair an engine -- this one isn't it (at least not for me). Another reviewer of this book found it to be too simple where as I find that it, like most other books of this nature, assumes the reader knows the jargon and understands the principles fairly well to start with. This book, at least for me, left much to be desired. I don't think it is as good as the Briggs and Stratton manual. It covers more engine types but does so in less detail and with less step by step directives. If you are the type of person who doesn't have a technical mind (and I don't) and doesn't easily understand mechanical devises (and I don't), I'd suggest you look elsewhere.

All small engines are similar and if you've had one of them apart, the others aren't that different or difficult to figure out.

The difficult part is finding the setting and specifications for each brand and model of engine: Head bolt torque spec, crankshaft end play allowance, point, plug gap settings, carburetor settings, Piston and bearing wear specs, etc.

All of these specs are provided in this manual in quick to access tables. This is a reference that will be by my bench all of the time and the pages are probably going to get very stained from repeated use.

My son (14) found this book at the library and liked it so much that he wanted his own copy. So step-by-step that I think even I (the mom) could work on small engines!

Not very up to date old print most of the illustration are the same as the ones I've bought 20year ago, I purchase two different book, small engine up to 5HP and 5 through 20HP, both of the same quality, new front cover old print old picture, One book was copied dated 1990 but the illustration are well over 25-30yr old.I would have though after this long of time they could have updated the material.

This text was recommended by the instructor of the small engine
repair class sponsored by the Urbana Adult Education Unit 4
district. It is bigger and has many more photos than the Demsey book but is less portable and fewer line drawings.

This manual is great for the beginner, however the latest and most up to date engines are not included. It's time for an updating of material.

Finally found a item that my husband can use everyday on our ranch. Most of our equipment has small engines so this manual allowed use to service many of them ourselves. Great product!!!!
