Solid collection, June 21, 2010
This is a decent compilation of older classic ghost stories, all of which involve children one way or another. Norton put together the collection back in 1974 and the stories were vintage even then. Nothing too horrific or graphic here, and it makes a solid addition to any ghost story collection. I had only previously read two of the nine stories, and enjoyed discovering the others.
The book is divided into three sections, and the contents include:
Introduction by Andre Norton
Ancient Evils:
Saloozy by Margery Lawrence
Herodes Redivius by A. B. L. Munby
The First Sheaf by H. R. Wakefield
Vengeful Spirits:
How Fear Departed from the Long Gallery by E. F. Benson
The Old Nurse's Story by Mrs Gaskell
Lost Hearts by M. R. James
Quiet Visitors:
A Little Ghost by Hugh Walpole
Playmates by A. M. Burrage
Faithful Jenny Dove by Eleanor Farjeon
