From the Back Cover

With a few tricks up your sleeve, small can be the new big!

While we may admire the spacious rooms in large homes we see in magazines or on TV, let's face it: most of us don't live in rambling estates. Instead, we live in homes, apartments, or condos with small rooms and even smaller closets. But you can enjoy an organized, beauty-filled life no matter what the size of your space. In this practical book, you'll learn how to

perform a room-by-room audit of your space to see if it's functioning at its best
make the most of existing storage space and find clever ways to add more
find creative ways to arrange furnishings and accessories that maximize space and bring harmony and style to the home
live graciously in a small space with others (especially those who aren't organized!)

Whether you're an empty nester who's downsizing, a newlywed setting up your first nest, or someone who just needs some creative new ideas, you'll love these strategies, tips, and solutions to maximize space and enhance your quality of life.

"Packed with practical and stylish tips, ideas, and resources to help you take your home from drab to dazzling, no matter what size your space or budget."--Laura Leist, author, CPO and founder of Eliminate Chaos; former president of the National Association of Professional Organizers

"Kathryn provides oodles of useful and affordable home organizing and decorating tips, information, and resources. She also shows that a home doesn't have to be large in size to be graciously grand in spirit."--Kitty Bartholomew, former HGTV host; decorating correspondent for ABC-TV's The Home Show

"This book will inspire you to rethink every inch of your dwelling to create space and live peaceably with your belongings. It's one of my new favorites to recommend."--Marcia Ramsland, author of Simplify Your Life, Simplify Your Time, and Simplify Your Space; www.OrganizingPro.com

I'm sure I'll get some useful tips when I read it all the way through, but I was expecting photos as well. I don't think I've ever come across a book on home organizing and decorating without at least a few visuals beyond the cover which is the reason for the 2 star rating.

"Small spaces give us the opportunity to live sincerely, forcing us to choose which of our possessions make our hearts sing." p. 15

I love that quote. Who wouldn't want to center on possessions that "make your heart sing"? Why keep anything but?

When the opportunity came up to review a book about living in a small space, I jumped at it. I need ideas. Lots of them. I know I can do this. At least, I keep telling myself I can. The hard reality of doing so is going to hit me real soon. Our home is almost finished.

Reading Small Space Organizing was the inspiration I needed. Kathryn shares many practical ideas for living with less. She shares:

"... it isn't just about the space; it's a lifestyle choice that's rich with blessings and--if you make it so--with beauty. (p. 18)

"...it's not just a physical process. It's also an emotional time of letting go of possessions and sometimes of sad memories, and also a time of remembering happy, meaningful family moments that took place there." (p. 26)

If you don't have room for possessions that have a special meaning, take pictures of them and put the pictures in a special memory album.

I'm a lover of cedar chests, but there is only so much room in a small home for them. I may have to get rid of one or two of mine so I appreciated Kathryn's suggestion to store seasonal clothes in suitcases.

Kathryn also recommends:

"... paint the walls and ceiling white or a soft pastel color to create a light and bright welcoming feeling." p. 53

Done! I like light and bright anyways which helped me determine the colors for my new (old) home. But it's nice to know it will also make it seem larger.

"With a few tricks up your sleeve small can be the new big!" This is the first line of the back of the book.
Each chapter is broke into areas of you home, where the author goes through each section describing ways to help you maximize your space. I found the book interesting, but was a bit disappointed that most of the ideas included buying special furniture, or special storage containers. And she is correct in the fact that having the right tools, the right furniture peices and the right containers can make any space, small or large look professionally decorated and managed. I think I was looking for more practical ideas of how to maximize what I have without buying anything new. I live in a small space and storage is an issue, so I was excited for a chance to review the book. However I did find the book easy to read, and interesting, and got a few ideas to help maximize my space.

I'm a Mother of many married to a man whose job situation has caused us to have to move often. More than once, we've had to rent a house sight unseen. Because of this, several times we have ended up spending a year or more in a house that was really a tad too small for our family size. Because I am by nature a fairly organized person and several of my children are also, we've managed to make do fairly well. However, if we'd had a copy of Small Space Organizing: A Room-by-Room Guide to Maximizing Your Space by Kathryn Bechen I daresay we'd have managed even better.

Covering everything from living in one room to life on the road in an RV, Kathryn gives her reader the ins-and-outs of small space living. There is little, if anything, that she has left uncovered. Moving from foyer to bath, covering baby's room, office and kitchen and everything in-between, Kathryn helps her readers create beautiful and functional homes by downsizing, organizing and utilizing the inexpensive, the unusual and the extraordinary 2nd hand find.

I've read many organizing books and I'd have to say this is, hands down, my favorite. Highly, highly recommended.

This book contains a wealth of information on how to make the most of your small space; There are tons of tips on how to clear your clutter and organize your belongings. I only gave it three stars because while I love the book, I think it would have been even better if they'd added pictures to illustrate the authors many ideas.

I almost feel bad giving this book one star because you can sense the pride the author has in her book and her home, but I ordered this book after reading Apartment Therapy's 8 Step Home Cure and I was sorely disappointed. The first night I read it I made it through the first three or four chapters and then had to throw the towel in. I didn't find any helpful information in here aside from the author's opinion on the benefits of living in a small home. Unfortunately the room-by-room suggestions weren't very helpful and while style is subjective, I just didn't see myself using many of the author's suggestions (i.e. hanging a wreath on the front door, using plastic storage boxes all over the place, etc). Wanted to like this book (since I share a 500 sq foot 1 BR condo with my fiance and an 80 lb greyhound) but it didn't happen.
