Review

This well proportioned set of Yoga cards sets itself apart from a number of what may appear to be similar products on the market. The clever use of color for organizing one s practice to include warm-ups, energizing, etc allows even the novice user to put together an effective series of postures. While the cards have the usual benefits/modifications/directions, the languaging used is Yoga/Sanskrit-lite, making them more adaptable to a wider variety of audiences such as schools, nursing homes and offices. The affirmations are clear but without what by some audiences might be considered New Agey or otherwise uncomfortable language. The practices selected are simple in description and as the title implies, can be easily adapted in small places. The construction is sturdy for durability and the instructions are well articulated and offer many practical suggestions for using the product. These cards would make great gifts for teachers, office workers and the road warriors on your shopping list. --Dr. Matthew J. Taylor, PT, PhD, RYT, Past President of the International Assocation of Yoga Therapists

Yoga for Small Spaces (Addriya.com, $19.99) is a set of colorful 5x7-inch flash cards of yoga poses you can do as the title suggests in small spaces including your office cubicle, planes and at school. Do you get stiff flying on business trips? Grab a few of the cards and take them with you. Or, if you teach, share a few of the poses on these cards with your kids and see if they feel more alert. On one side of the cards are illustrations of the pose, and on the other is a written explanation of how to do the pose, how it benefits you and modifications you can do if needed. I liked gas pedal feet for energizing the legs in a sitting position and washing windows that stretches the spine and gave my arms a bit of a workout while seated. Yoga for Small Spaces may be the perfect antidote to that sluggishness that inevitably arises during long, boring work conference calls. --Tammy Chase, Chicago Sun-Times

As a kids yoga teacher I have several decks of yoga cards. Like big flashcards, yoga cards illustrate poses on the front with instructions on the back, and can be great in either the classroom itself or behind the scenes in lesson planning. The other day someone added to my collection by giving me the Yoga for Small Spaces deck by Christine Ristuccia and Lynne Geddes, and I have fallen in love. Big, flashcard-sized love. And surprise! This deck is good for kid and adult yogis alike. Each card features a colorful illustration on the front showing the pose and maybe its inspiration. On the back there is so much information, more than most cards I ve seen. There are tips on modifications and verbal cues when teaching, a list of benefits and even a mantra or affirmation to go along with the posture. Somehow, all this fits on a card. And the cards are color-coded by pose-type (warm-ups, energizing poses, resting poses, etc) so you can easily structure your own practice, class, or find inspiration. Since New Yorkers have plenty of everything except space, this is the perfect deck for New York yogis. You can pick a few cards and string a practice together, complete with warm ups, breath work and anything you want to focus on from heart-openers to twists. Because the deck is kid-friendly too, it s perfect for use in schools since lack of space is a huge issue in most public schools. You can do yoga behind your chair or, hey, even IN your chair! This deck proves you don t need a studio or a mat to do yoga. You can do yoga anywhere: from the office to your school to an airplane (yes, an airplane!). All you need is yourself and your breath. How simple and powerful is that? --Sarah Herrington, Yoga Teacher

NOTE: I received a free copy of this deck for review from the publicist.

The box describes Yoga for Small Spaces, a 52-Card Yoga Deck, as "Standing, Sitting & Chair Yoga for Offices * Schools * Planes." Although the set would definitely work for all of those situations, once you open the box, the cute illustrations and simple descriptions will immediately make you think that these cards are for children. This is not surprising, as the included 8-page instructional fold-out explains that the deck was originally created for classroom use, with the main advantage being that no equipment is needed.

The authors of this deck are Christine Ristuccia and Lynn Geddes, both Registered Yoga Teachers; Ristuccia is also a pediatric speech language therapist. In their instructional handout, they discuss how to use the cards. Each 5"x7" card has a full-color illustration of the yoga pose on one side, and on the reverse, it offers the key element of the posture, detailed setup cues, benefits of the pose, possible modifications, and an affirmation to go along with that pose. In addition, the cards are organized by several different methods to assist with the selection of poses. First, each card has a colored border, with the six different colors pertaining to how that posture group can support well-being--for example, orange poses stimulate creativity. Second, each card is marked with one or more small icons representing whether that pose is a warm-up, basic level, resting pose, energizing pose, or intermediate. The remainder of the fold-out covers breathing, alignment, and basic postural instructions.

The postures themselves offer a nice variety.

Just received and reviewed this deck. I love it! I'm am an adult and bought it for my own personal use. This deck is perfect for beginners, children or for people who need modifications.

I currently take an in-studio yoga class (which is catered towards the less flexible due to injury or size) and these cards are like the class in a box, as if the creator took my instructor and boxed her up. Perfect!

Please don't dismiss this as strictly a children's product due to the drawings. I actually find the drawings to be cute and helpful. Each card offers step by step instructions for properly getting into each pose, including breathing (which is extremely important in yoga), modifications as well as letting the user know which areas are being targeted, which is also helpful for knowing if you're doing it properly.

This is not a set for the hardcore yogini, but great for anyone starting out, inflexible or with children. I highly recommend it and plan on telling my classmates about it tonight!

Might even buy another set for my sister-in-law who has never done yoga but is interested on learning...and she can do it with my nephew!
