5.0 out of 5 stars What a great first record, December 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Small Time (Audio CD)
Grey is a great new voice on the alt-country (for lack of a better word) scene. The songs here have the honest and plaintive feel of a Gillian Welch or Emmy Lou, but all the songs are very, very catchy - watch out, they *will* stick with you, especially with the great 60's country feels of "Blue State of Mind" or the wonderfully heartbreaking "Free" and "Loving In The Past." Grey's voice achieves emotional greatness on the gorgeous acapella gospel tune "Calvary", and in the unbelievably sexy and atmospheric spanish "Sabor A Mi."

Grey Delisle is firmly in the school of Johnny Cash and Carter Family sincerity: Very tough, heartfelt, and with an unusually attractive atmosphere that occasionally stuns you with its mood or depth, and leaves you wanting more.

Grey is the real deal all right, and it will be very interesting to follow her early career. I don't know how she'll top The Small Time, but I can't wait to hear more output from her. Five stars, gladly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why Is This Girl Not Famous Yet?, November 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Small Time (Audio CD)
You know how when you ask what kind of music people like, they inevitably say "I listen to everything...except country." Well, they wouldn't say that if they had Grey Delisle in mind. If you like Iris DeMent, Freakwater, Old 97's, Emmylou Harris, Lone Justice, and the Knitters, you will love "the small time". The songwriting will make you wonder how the hell half the acts in Nashville ever get signed when there are talents like this around. (And it doesn't hurt that hers is also the prettiest face to grace the alt. country scene since...ever.) So be the coolest kid on your block and get into Grey now, or jump on the bandwagon when she is bigger than Loretta Lynn...the choice is yours.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new sound in Country Music, November 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Small Time (Audio CD)
With a mimgling of rock, gospel and country Grey has created a sound all her own. Just when you think you'locked in on a style the style changes. No repetive beats here. Each song is a new experience. Great first effort. I look forward to more!

5.0 out of 5 stars My last review wasn't helpful at all!, December 9, 2001
This review is from: The Small Time (Audio CD)
Sorry about that. But I should say..Grey's just such a nice friendly person (haven't actually MET her, just communicated with her through a messageboard). She also has a very unique voice, although my sister has compared her to Paula Cole at times. i agree- it is strong, yet sweet, and I also must compliment her on on her voice range! Not many people i know could do the 'cynical' tone (Mandy from Grim & evil), the 'sweet' tone (Amazing Ally), and all the other characters she voice-acts for. Grey's such an amazing person...

5.0 out of 5 stars Viva La Difference!, December 20, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Small Time (Audio CD)
Grey's CD is truly different sounding. The songs are unique enough to keep you listening often.... Each song pulls you in and makes you wanna stay there... kind of like reading a good novel and not wanting to put it down. She definitely has a different sound, unlike any alternative country musician I have ever heard. I think we got a winner here!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Small Wonder!, December 7, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Small Time (Audio CD)
Me and my dad are in love with Grey Delisle and we don't even know her!The Small Time is an old fashioned ,heart-felt, masterpiece full of whiskey,pick-ups,catchy hooks and d-i-v-o-r-c-e ---just the way real country was meant to be. We highly recommend this record and we've been known to be two downright picky bastards!Buy this cd but be careful ----you just may get your heart stolen, too!

This seems to me one of these things: You like it or you don't. My personal favorites on this are "The Brick" and "Blue State of Mind", 'cuz i like the sounds, the melody, the lyrics, things like that. However, i can use 'Sabor a mi" as a torture for my friend...

Overall: This is a really nice album!
