More About the Author

...Every 5 minutes, 24 hours a day, somewhere in the world, someone downloads a Connie Shelton mystery...

A personal Thank You to all my readers who make this little statistic possible. Having fun with my writing, and connecting with readers--that's what being a mystery writer means to me. And I LOVE what I do!

It began in 1985 when I started writing my first novel, without much clue how to go about it. Two years and 500 pages later, when I finally typed 'The End,' I felt a huge rush of excitement. That book took third place in the Southwest Writers competition and began making the rounds of publishers. I simply started writing my second, and then my third books.

After publishing ten of my Charlie Parker mysteries, I decided to branch out with a second series and I created the character of Samantha Sweet. One of the ways in which I earned a little extra pocket money during my high school years was to bake and decorate cakes--hence, a career for Samantha based on my own experiences.

In 2009 I switched publishers and was off on a new adventure, seeing all of my books made available for Kindle and the other ebook devices that were just beginning to take off in the book world. It's been an exciting time in publishing and I'm loving the new formats and the ability to personally connect with readers all over the world via my newsletter and my website at connieshelton.com.

Besides writing the Charlie Parker and Samantha Sweet mysteries, Connie is an award-winning essayist. Her work has been published in both small and major anthologies, like Chicken Soup For the Writer's Soul, and her short stories have won several prizes. She has also been a commercial hot air balloon pilot and holds the women's world altitude record for size AX-4 balloons. She has been featured in Who's Who and The World Who's Who of Women. She and her husband live in northern New Mexico.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great mystery series..., July 19, 2000
This review is from: Small Towns Can Be Murder: The Fourth Charlie Parker Mystery (Charlie Parker Mysteries) (Paperback)
Valle Escondido, New Mexico, a small town where everyone knows everyone. Charlie and her assistant Sally decided to take a visit there and meet one of Sally's friends. Once Charlie meets Laura and learns of her friend's death due to a miscarriage, it only takes a grain of doubt from Laura for Charlie to realize she can't help herself. Was it a miscarriage or murder? With her brother talking gun control and a hunky visitor from Hawaii finding a landing spot in her heart. Charlie does a little soul searching while she hunts down the murderer.

Charlie is a PI who does it her way and when she doesn't have a human partner, she brings along her dog Rusty (my favorite part of the read). I enjoyed the mystery, which wasn't easy to solve and that's how I like it. And Ms. Shelton knows how to add the right amount of humor in just the right spot.

Her mystery series is a treat to read!

This review is from: Small Towns Can Be Murder: The Fourth Charlie Parker Mystery (Charlie Parker Mysteries) (Paperback)
As usual Shelton is great on food ans scenery and dog behavior. She does wonderful minor characters, especially if they're obnoxious. She lets villains off lightly. There's quartet of abhorrent Texans in this that Texas will never recover from. Actually there are too many nice people in this. Her nice people are too nice. The main plot (almost subsidiary to the romantic interest sub-plot) is about an abortion-related death in a small New Mexican town. It's not very plausible (unless New Mexico has no Medical Examiners, Coroners, Inquests, Autopsies, Maternal Death Inquiry Committtees, State Health Departments or District Attorneys or none of them have telephones). This is fourth in the series after Partnerships Can Kill but the action seems to follow right on from Vacations Can Be Murder.

3.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant who-done-it, June 27, 1998
By A Customer
Albuquerque based CPA Charlotte "Charlie" Parker and her assistant Sally Bertrand visit the town of Valle Escondido. While in her hometown, Sally visits her friend Laura Armijo, who finds out that another friend Cynthia died from a miscarriage. However, Laura insists that the deceased's spouse used to beat up his wife all the time, causing Laura's death.

Charlie accepts the premise that Cynthia's abusive spouse murdered his pregnant woman as probably true. Unable to ignore this possibility, Charlie begins to investigate the death of Cynthia in order to prove that the woman died from spousal abuse and not a miscarriage.

In SMALL TOWNS CAN BE MURDER athough the plot is a bit thin, the characters are extremely well rounded, likeable and believable.gossip. Charlie is a charming amateur sleuth and the sub-plots involving her personal life provide much insight into her character that will please fans of the series. Connie Shelton does a brilliant job of showing how invisible the issue of spousal abuse can really be when nobody wants to see.
