small wars and skirmishes, 1902-1918, July 26, 2008
This review is from: Small Wars and Skirmishes: 1902-1918 (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book covering an interesting,if neglected period. The writing is well done and evenhanded. Most works on the "colonial wars" cover the era from about 1879 to 1902, and are anglo-centric. If the sources are not in english, or don't feature the British Empire, you will be hard pressed to find books on the other players in this era. And other than the Zulus, the opponents of the "colonials" remain for the most part faceless hordes of maxim fodder.
This book goes a long way in redressing those imbalances. The book covers: The Americans in the Philippines, Central America, the caribean and Mexico, the Dutch in Indonesia, and the French, German, Portugese, Italian, and Spanish in Africa. It also includes the British in Asia and Africa. Although primarily writen for an military history/wargaming audience, there is a lot of hard to find and facinating information in these pages, and the drawings of the various combattants are well done.
This is an excellent book, especialy when paired with "Risings And Rebellions,1919 to 1939",by the same author.
The chapters conclude with the historical effects of each campaign-and as the chapters covering the contries that later became East Timor, Rwanda Sudan, Tibet and the Pakistani/Afgan border show us all too well-"the lessons of history take a long time to learn."
