Product Description

At first no one noticed the island on the lake - nor paid any attention to the gnarly pretense of a man who drifted onto it, sitting astride a wooden log with a huge grimoire on his lap employing a shovel as his unlikely paddle. A ghastly green mist soon shrouded the island, wrapping it in a ghostly silence pierced only by a maniacal laughter and some intermittent curses. Then, one moonlit night, an impossibly crooked tower emerged high above the mist, casting a long and dark shadow on the surrounding land.... The Necromancer had arrived!

Necromancer Island, as a promotional expansion to Small World, is a great product in concept. One player, taking on the role of necromancer, must work towards his goal of getting all of his units into play before the end of the game. He can buy multiple special powers and gains units when active race tokens are defeated. The other players must prevent the necromancer from winning, while competing with each other to earn the most points.

Unfortunately, it appears that this expansion wasn't well play-tested: Basically, the necromancer can't lose. Usually there's nothing the other players can do unless the necromancer plays poorly on purpose, and certain combinations (any special power that grants him immunity; dragon master, heroic) just speed up the process. Our one play seemed fun until we realized halfway through that the necromancer simply had to sit there, doing nothing, to win. We packed it up and never touched it again.

If you're like me and wanted to purchase this (very small) expansion just for the Completist's sake, I wouldn't bother. It might be worth having if you can get it free, but fixing the game enough to just make it playable would take a lot of effort. The rules, as written, are completely broken.

I have this expansion because it was part of a free promotion from Days of Wonder. If you pre-ordered "Be Not Afraid" from them, you got "Necromancer Island" for free. It's one punch-out card with the island, well of souls and a set of ghost tokens. As a promotional item, I think it was a great idea--it made me pre-order "Be Not Afraid", at least!

But how is this "expansion"? While it's a fun idea in principle, the rule-set that comes with it is a bit silly. Frankly, as others have said, the Necromancer can be far too powerful, and it makes it less fun for everyone as a result. It is more fun to play without this expansion than with it using the rules that come with it.

If you search for the rule-set online, you'll find out that the Necromancer is able to use victory coins to buy new Ghosts or additional special powers. While these special powers make new Ghosts cost more, they can also make him absurdly powerful to the point of being nearly unbeatable, especially since there's a good chance he'll pull a powerful ability like Dragon Master, Commando, Heroic, et cetera.

All of that said, I think there is potential here with a modified rule-set. For example, one could change the rules so that the Necromancer can only use one special power that he gets to pick at the beginning from his six random draws with Ghosts costing the number of deployed Ghosts+1 as usual. I haven't tried this myself, but I am hoping to the next time I play it (if I can get people to--frankly, other players are pretty turned off by the Necromancer expansion generally).

Finally, let me remphasize how overpriced I think this currently is on Amazon's sellers list.

I bought this because I'm that guy who wants to have every expansion for the few games I own. However, this was a completely pointless purchase as no one wants to ever play it again. The necromancer can't lose, even if the players gang up on his ghosts. Once he gets a few stackable specials in play, its over. The other expansions have offered something worthwhile, but this is a no go, waste of money. Mildly fun but it changes the mood of the game so much, it just isn't really worth it.

You can still get this on days of wonder for $6 plus shipping. It's over powered but if you house rule it a bit it's not to bad.
