5.0 out of 5 stars This is how good pop/rock should sound.
Smalltown Poets are a good pop/rock band. This debut CD proves that fact without any doubts. If you like good melodies, energetic instruments, and sing-a-long lyrics, then you will absolutely love this CD.

It is good to encounter yet another band unashamed of their faith in God. They are willing to stand up for their devotion to Jesus in public. The song...

The song "Prophet, Priest, and King" is a witty introduction on this CD that helps foster the importance of our relationship with God. The remaining 10 songs carry similar themes that help shape our thoughts and redirect them back to God.

This is also an enhanced CD. There are a couple of videos you can watch on your computer. I was impressed with them too. Much like the band itself, none of the videos are fancy. It is this stripped-down and honest approach that helps set a "we are for real" atmosphere that makes you want to trust these guys. In the videos, it is fun watching the band on stage or behind the scenes as they travel and prepare for concerts.

This is really a fun CD from start to finish. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Few Great Songs on a Good CD, October 2, 2000
This review is from: Smalltown Poets (Audio CD)
This is a great CD to listen to all the way through. The sounds are diverse all the way through. The lyrics deserve 5 stars all the way through. They are full of life experience, and passion. My favorite songs are "Prophet, Priest and King", "If You'll Let Me Love You", and "Trust". Unfortunately my least favorite song "Monkey's Paw" would really make a great poem. The lyrics are great, but I believe the music leaves something to be desired. If you like Jars of Clay, or Jennifer Knapp, you'll probably like these guys. Give them a shot, listen to it all the way through first.

Smalltown Poets is one of the most underrated bands in the Christian/Pop Genre. I love their music. This album starts off strong with "Prophet, Priest, and King" and keeps on going from there. There are a couple of filler songs on this album but overall it is great. This cd comes with some great bonus features that you can access by putting it into your computer. If you like this album check out Big Tent Revival's album "Amplifier."

You will still hear the art as this group is yet to be commercially sold out. Wonderful depth and vocal sound. Should appeal to wide audience. The kind of music that many rock bands seemed to start out as. Fresh yet still classic in feel.

The kind of music that takes you both up and down and may be listened to for long periods of time. Wonderful full array of poetic sounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you're skeptical of Christian Rock, check this out., May 27, 1999
This review is from: Smalltown Poets (Audio CD)
For nearly 10 years, I've searched for music with a Christian message that thoroughly satisfies my ear for rock, without being 10 years behind the times. I've usually come away disappointed and discouraged. It's even made me question the source or my thirst for this style of music. Everything I checked out seemed to pale compared to secular bands like Toad the Wet Sprocket or Foo Fighters. The Smalltown Poets, however, make the cut. Their songs rock; they're original enough, but not so much as to be weird. And their lyrics are meaningful on an eternal level - something Toad or the Fighters can't deliver. Thank God for the Smalltown Poets. Hope you buy their CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars first offering under new name is A+, July 21, 2000
This review is from: Smalltown Poets (Audio CD)
For those who didn't already know the band under it's original name, Villanelle, the sound may be new to you, but it is excellent. Very easy to listen to, beginning to end, over and over again. I took a road trip not to long ago and brought 20 CDs with me. I stuck this one in first and didn't realize until I reached my destination that I listened to the same CD over and over again. Diverse sounds... some mellow, some upbeat, all introspective and enlighting... lyrics that make you think.

This album was amazing! It had a whole lot of really great songs!! I love to listen to this CD! It has some of the most inspirational songs out there, with a good beat. It sends out a great message, and has a variety of sounds on it- this is by far one of the best Contemporary Christian Bands out there!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not their first album/CD, October 6, 1999

I noticed a few of these reviews stated that they love this band's first CD. Well, I'm here to tell you that it's not their first CD. Smalltown Poets actually started out as a band called Villanelle. With a very small record label and not much marketing support, their first album, Pinwheels and Orange Peels, quickly went out of print and their label went belly-up. So my advice for all those of you who like Smalltown Poets is to search those bargain bins for copies of Villanelle and see where this band started. It's a very good album that you'll be glad you spent a couple dollars on. By the way, I love this Smalltown Poets album and their latest, Listen Closely, as well. So there's my two cents worth, happy hunting and listening!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Smalltown Poets make it big!!!!, August 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Smalltown Poets (Audio CD)
A lush sound and deft lyrics mark the first album by the band. With tracks like "Monkey's Paw" and "Everything I Hate", the band really documents the heart and struggle in our walk with Christ. For being their first CD they did especially well. I highly recommend this band's work, as it promises to get better and reach new heights.
