Editorial Review

Inspired by the Marvel Comics Superboy series, and not by the WB television series Smallville, these plastic figures from the early days of the Man of Steel make for an impressive addition to any collection. Both Superboy and young Clark Kent are represented, as are Ma and Pa Kent, Lana Lang, a young Lex Luthor (yes, there was a young Lex Luthor), and Krypto the Dog. All six stand aboard posing platforms. What makes this set fun is how unsubtle the characterizations are: Lex Luthor holds a box of kryptonite, Ma Kent holds a freshly baked pie. This adherence to traditional American archetypes such as hero, villain, best gal, and loving mom is one main reason the world of Superman has remained such a solid part of American cultural mythology. --John Moe

4.0 out of 5 stars Smallville - the comic, July 1, 2002

This is the comic book version of Smallville - pre-TV. Ma and Pa Kent are a lot older than their television versions and Lana Lang, God bless her, has the red hair and the average teenage look she always had in comics. If you loved the Superboy comics of the 60s, you'll love this set.

Despite what reviewer Lawrance thinks, Lex Luthor was part the of the Superboy mythos. In fact, Superboy inadvertently caused the loss of Lex's hair, which is why Lex hated Superboy/man in the first place. (And yes, he and Clark were best friends before Lex took the mad scientist route.) Anyway, just wanted to point that out if any were deterred from buying this excellent PVC set because of Lex's inclusion. There isn't a lot of Superboy stuff out there, particularly pre-Crisis Superboy stuff, and I highly recommend picking up this set. Also, keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming SUPERBOY ARCHIVES book, which will reprint old-school Superboy stories (as soon as it comes out).

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Smallville PVC set from DC Comics, June 4, 2003

Contrary to what at least one review indicates this is based on the DC COMICS "Superboy" magazine from the 50's and 60's NOT anything from competitor Marvel Comics. Considering the small scale the figures likenesses are accurate to their comic book source. I especiallly like Krypto, the Super Dog. It is a charming collectible for fans who remember the classic comic book Superboy from the 50's and 60's, but could possibly disappoint fans of the current "Smallville" TV show based on the same source material.
