Editorial Review
Inspired by the Marvel Comics
Superboy series, and not by the WB television series
Smallville, these plastic figures from the early days of the Man of Steel make for an impressive addition to any collection. Both Superboy and young Clark Kent are represented, as are Ma and Pa Kent, Lana Lang, a young Lex Luthor (yes, there was a young Lex Luthor), and Krypto the Dog. All six stand aboard posing platforms. What makes this set fun is how unsubtle the characterizations are: Lex Luthor holds a box of kryptonite, Ma Kent holds a freshly baked pie. This adherence to traditional American archetypes such as hero, villain, best gal, and loving mom is one main reason the world of Superman has remained such a solid part of American cultural mythology.
