Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

With the same alternative-pop theme as the first Smallville collection, this second disc once again reveals just how much the show integrates music into its plot lines and overall feel. The track list includes familiar songs such as the All American Rejects' "Dirty Little Secret," and Depeche Mode's newest hit "Precious," but there are also a few surprises. The Alan Moulder remix of the Dandy Warhols' "All The Money Or Simple Life Honey" is a booty-shaking blast, while the rock-meets-goth cover of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" courtesy of HIM is an amusingly amped-up new take on the older tune. Actress-songstress Minnie Driver offers her light jazz take on Springsteen's "Hungry Heart" (which also appeared on her debut disc), and Lifehouse delivers their touching version of "You and Me," while Josh Kelley's "Almost Honest" could be the soundtrack to anybody's breakup or breakdown. It's true that many of these songs have been previously released, but Smallville fans are a devoted bunch who will likely appreciate being able to buy their favorite tracks on one disc. --Denise Sheppard

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good, balanced follow-up to the terrific "Talon Mix", November 21, 2005

This review is from: Smallville, Vol. 2: Metropolis Mix (Audio CD)
I purchased "Smallville: Vol. 2 - Metropolis Mix" on a whim. I've been a huge fan of the show since I bought the Season One DVD a few months ago, and one of the things I love the most about the show is the music. I was unfamiliar with most of the songs on this album, but hey - it was Smallville, so I decided to pick it up.

The album gets off to a good start with Breaking Benjamin's "Forget It", an unspectacular but likable song. Depeche Mode's new hit "Precious" follows. It's a good song that gets old after a while. The next track, "You and Me (Wedding Version)" by Lifehouse, is one of the highlights of the album. I love Lifehouse, and "You and Me" is one of their best songs.

Stereophonics' "Superman" - the second song with that title to appear on "Smallville" - is one of my favorite songs on the album. The next song, The All-American Rejects' "Dirty Little Secret", is a fine song despite being overplayed on the radio. Josh Kelley's "Almost Honest" is a well-done song, but it just doesn't stand out in my mind. The always fun Dandy Warhols contribute "All The Money Or The Simple Life Honey (Remix)", a nice little tune. Brendan Benson's "Cold Hands (Warm Heart)" is one of the album's better songs.

"The Girl's Attractive" by Diamond Nights sounds like a lost Billy Idol tune - which isn't necessarily a bad thing. One of the more catchy tunes on the album is Flashlight Brown's "I'm A Human", which is followed by Him's enjoyably rocked-out cover of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game". KT Tunstall's "Other Side of the World" is another highlight of the album, somewhat reminescent of a Coldplay song.

Minnie Driver's cover of "Hungry Heart" is definitely a change from Bruce Springsteen's original, taking that sing-along tune and turning it into a sad, broken-hearted love song. Finally, the album closes off with Rascal Flatt's "Feels Like Today".

"The Metropolis Mix" is a very good, balanced follow-up to the terrific "Talon Mix". It may not be superior, but "Smallville" fans will certainly enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Truly Awesome Mix, January 28, 2006
This review is from: Smallville, Vol. 2: Metropolis Mix (Audio CD)
First of all, I love the show Smallville, although that is not the only reason I love this mix. It's got a great variety of songs, from Stereophonics "Superman" to Lifehouse's "You and Me." Some highlights in my opinion are "Precious" by Depeche Mode and "Forget It" by Breaking Benjamin.

Forget It - The way I see it, this is one of the most beautiful songs ever on Smallville, and maybe even of all time. I know you're probably thinking, "Yeah, so what, eveyone says that," but take this for some proof that it is an excellent song: I am known for getting sick of songs fast, and I mean fast. So when I listened to this song 378 times and it is the most played song on my iPod, so it must be something VERY special and unique. The way the song builds is purely genius. It is simply beautiful.

Precious - What can I say, Depeche Mode has done it again. This songs has a romantic, gloomy and unique sound to it, yet I can't imagine getting tired of it. It reminds me a little of "Forget It" in the sense that it is breathtaking. I would have to place this song right behind "Forget It" for my favorite song of all time. And don't forget, I am really hard to impress.

Thank you Smallville, for making a mix that is worth every penny.

The Talon mix was very good but this one is really good. With more songs than the first, the metropolis mix is filled with rock songs and some couple love songs. It's a must have for pop/rock fans and, naturally, fans of the show.My favorite track is HIM's new cover for the beautiful song wicked game.Brendan benson's song is very good to it makes me think of the Talon, the atmosphere of the bar.Anyway, all the tracks are huge and i recommend the CD to everybody!...
