For every president, there has been a first lady, sometimes two. Who were these women? How has the job of First Lady (unpaid and unelected) changed over time? The Smart About format proves just right for covering history in an easy, appealing way.

Smart about the First Ladies,
By
This review is from: Smart About the First Ladies: Smart About History (Paperback)
I bought this book for my 1st-grade daughter and she loves it! Each time we read this book, she selects a new favorite first lady. It is not the best history book ever written, but it has sparked a young childs interest in history and learning about our country.

My daughters absolutely love the "Smart About" book series. The First Ladies is no exception. We bought this book when my daughters were in first grade, and they loved the book so much they wanted to bring it to school. One of my daughters was reading to the class. She would call out and ask, "What first lady do you want to hear about?"
Well, when they got to Hillary Clinton she read "...But when Bill was unfaithful and then lied about it..." I was mortified when her teacher came to me with the delightful anecdote of trying to divert the conversation, and the political debates that ensued in that first grade classroom. So, buy this book, but keep it at home.

After buying and reading "Smart about the Presidents", I was very interested in reading "Smart about the First Ladies". Like the other "Smart About" books, I was very intrigued with this one, too. The facts about the first ladies was educational, and I loved the pictures and illustrations. I have shared this with my grandchildren. I highly recommend this book.
