Book Description

December 22, 2009 9 and up
Do you know America? No, I mean, do you REALLY know America? Would you recognize John Adams in a lineup? Can you identify any presidents between Lincoln and Roosevelt?

Hmmm. I thought so.

Well, you really need this book.

Not only will it improve your sorry historical knowledge, it will crack you up, and give you material to throw your teachers off-balance for entire class periods. Identify their lies! Point out their half-truths! And possibly, just possibly, gain some extra credit for yourself.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up—In the style of acclaimed writers Jon Stewart (The Daily Show) and Steven Colbert (The Colbert Report), this witty, comedic, and appealing volume abandons the world of historical dates and battles to fill in some of the gaps in young Americans' knowledge of their country's history. Readers learn of General Washington's rebellion against the "basic rules of boating safety" as well as encounter James K. Polk's mullet ("Business up front, party in the back, baby.") while benefiting greatly from the book's efficient presentation of pivotal themes and events such as the American Revolution, Civil War, and Civil Rights Movement. This clever and informative work follows a chronological arrangement from early exploration to the inauguration of President Barack Obama in January 2009. Each chapter concludes with a "Some of the Stuff We Missed" section, essay questions such as "Who was the bigger jerk, Hitler or Stalin?"; vocabulary words; and multiple choice "End-of-Chapter Questions" that range from "What do you think happened to those Croatoan guys—and what gave you that idea?" to "What Civil War guy had the best nickname?" Small black-and-white photos and reproductions appear throughout. The companion Web site contains supplemental information, links to relevant documents and other sites, and "Assignment Alerts!" for further exploration. This informal approach is sure to appeal to even the most reluctant of readers.—Brian Odom, Pelham Public Library, AL

More About the Author

Adam Selzer is the proud coiner of the immortal phrase "you don't have to be smart to be a smartass, but it helps." He writes humorous books (both fiction and non) for readers of all ages by day and runs ghost tours in Chicago by night. If you can find two cooler jobs than that, take 'em! He is one of those people you hear about on the news who has to choose between paying off student loans and having a health care plan, and occasionally claims to be the third cowboy from the left in the famous "lost thunderbird photo." He is also credited by film historians as having inspired the film "Bedtime for Bonzo," which starred Ronald Reagan and a chimp. People who point out that said movie was released decades before he was born just don't know enough about quantum physics. Adam enjoys standing in long lines for tickets, and hopes to one day travel back in time to wait in line overnight for tickets to see a Charles Dickens reading. 5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and Informative...How Often Does That Happen? January 10, 2010
Format:Paperback
I really can't believe no one has reviewed this book yet. I work at a bookstore and picked this up after flipping through a couple of random chapters. If only textbooks were this amusing the world would be a much better place, believe me. I'm 35 and found myself cracking up at the jokes yet strangely dredging up all these facts and tidbits I thought had seeped out with time. Guess some of that stuff sticks around in the old grey matter somewhere. The book seems geared toward young adults and teens but I think anyone with half a sense of humor would appreciate it, from teens all the way up. The Smart Aleck's Guide is short and to the point, touching on only the most important (or ridiculous) aspects of American History, and I certainly wouldn't rely on it to get me through college. How much could they cram into one book, though, seriously? Where textbooks fail and this achieves, for me anyway, is spark some new or long forgotten interest in the history of us as a people and our beloved yet not-perfect nation. This is done with brief yet informative chapters, sidebars and footnotes, and a helluva lot more fart jokes. My personal favorite has to be the wealth of paintings and photographs we've all seen before, yet with laugh-out loud captions by some Smart-Aleck (check out the pants on the guys on the back of the two-dollar bill sometime). Anyway, I'd highly recommend this book to any parents with young adults, teens, or some 90 year-old coot wanting to brush up on his/her history. I can only hope the Smart Alecks continue what they started and come up with more volumes to add to this. There's a lot of history out there, and a lot more jokes to be had at the expense of some centuries-long dead guy. Trust me, they won't care.

Good for those who think the usual history book is boring. Somewhat quirky, but fun to read, sometimes makes good points.
