About the Author

Frank Gross, Ph.D. (Tallahassee, FL) is Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at Florida State University. He previously served as Lead Engineer for the Mitre Corp. and a Senior Research Engineer at the Georgia Tech Research Institute. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Ohio State University, has authored over 50 professional papers in electro-magnetics, and contributed to Wiley’s Encyclopedia of Electrical Engineering.

More About the Author

Frank Gross is currently a Technical Fellow at Boeing. He received his Ph.D. at Ohio State in the areas of radar scattering, target recognition, and electromagnetics. Frank's expertise lies in a variety of physics based disciplines including: electromagnetics, antennas, propagation, metamaterials, and array processing. Much of his recent work has been focused on DARPA contracts including NSC and S-BUG. He has developed several varieties of space-based arrays and demonstrated their adaptive beamforming performance. In addition he developed a new AESA array thinning technique using Cantor ring fractal templates. He also invented a new metamaterial structure based upon complementary tilings which is in process for a patent. He is the author of the book on "Smart Antennas for Wireless Communications with Matlab", McGraw-Hill, 2005 and he is the Editor-in-Chief for the new book on "Frontiers in Antennas", McGraw-Hill, 2011. He was formerly an electrical engineering professor at the Florida State University for 18 years.

This textbook is the best of all fundamental texts on smart antennas and adaptive arrays. It reduces this complex topic into the basic elements that are necessary for understanding smart antennas. Basic chapters are written on electromagnetics, antennas, arrays, random processes, channel modeling, spectral estimation, and adaptive arrays. Most chapters include worked out Matlab examples illustrating concepts just explained. The Matlab codes for each example, figure, and homework problems are included with the text. I have seen no other comparable text which lucidly explains the foundations of smart antennas and which also gives computer examples.

Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
The author gives an excellent treatment of beamforming methods which is clearer than many other treatments. Included are easy-to-understand worked examples which drive home the text material.
Part of the field of Smart Antennas is array signal processing which is treated in chapters 4, 5, & 7 as well as chapter 8. Not much is written about MIMO processing in chapter 6; perhaps this topic could be expanded in later editions; even so, the minimal treatment is presented well.

it has matlab examples so that it is easy to undersdand. but it started from very basic things. For someone who wants to know adaptive antenna itself, it may be boring.
