Great AIO that runs too small
on November 11, 2013
Once bumGenius changed the style of their Elemental all in ones, I searched for a "replacement" since I was in the process of transitioning most of our stash from pocket diapers to all in one style diapers. I do also love the Simplex AIO diaper and honestly would recommend that over this Smart Bottoms if you are fine with the Simplex not being organic cotton. However, if you are looking for an organic cotton alternative, Smart Bottoms MAY work for you.
I love that Smart Bottoms has a foldable, attached insert. You can very easily adjust it to provide more absorbency in the back, front, or middle, and it dries fast since it flips out in the wash. Once the Smart Bottoms is prepped all the way--and like other reviewers have said, you do absolutely need to wash it 5-6 times before it won't leak--it's very absorbent. It is trim enough on my daughter now that she's almost 2 years old, but when younger and on a smaller snap setting, I didn't find these any trimmer than other AIO diapers we had, so we still had to size up a pant size.
The biggest issue we have had is that I cannot seeing these fitting from birth to potty (8-35 lbs) like they claim. I am not sure what it is specifically about this design, but my 2 year old, who is around 27lbs, is on the very, very last waist snap setting, with the rise unsnapped all the way, and the waist barely fits her. It's just too tight. This is the only one-size diaper brand in our entire stash where she is on the verge of outgrowing it. Our bumGenius Elementals, Blueberry Simplex, Rumpkinz pockets, Alva pockets, Blueberry Econappi pockets--she's nowhere near outgrowing any of those so I'm not sure what it is about the style of Smart Bottoms that makes them so tight on her. Smart Bottoms sells waist extenders on their website so it is an issue other people have had that they are aware of, but I'm not going to buy waist extenders when we have other diapers that fit her just fine as-is. It's too bad since I do like the design of Smart Bottoms, but I guess I'll put them away for now until my next child fits into them.
