Jeanne's book provides the canine professional with quality, no-nonsense information that he can use to improve the over-all health of his breeding lines, and guides the pet owner with understandable background search information useful for finding a healthy canine friend for life. You'll learn more about canine genetic health testing from this book in 10 minutes of reading than in years of heartbreaking personal experience. Don't pass this one by -- you'll regret not having it on your ready-reference shelf.
To mention just a few of the high points: first, Jeanne carefully handwalks the reader through clear explanations of the most common canine genetic health problems and the presently available testing for each. Second, she isolates each of the 50 most popular AKC breeds and in concise, columnar form describes the most prevalent health problems in each breed, and what a smart puppy buyer can do to minimize the chances that his choice puppy will suffer from any of them. i've been wanting to buy a dog for a long time and as i've been making a decision about what kind of dog to buy and when, this book has been really helpful. the format of the book has been great, in that i can look at different breeds side by side. the issues raised about health, diseases, and testing have raised my own awareness of what questions to ask before making such a big decision.
it is obvious in reading Ms.Cook's summary of all the issues she talks about that she has a lot of knowledge and a real heart for dogs. she shows a true desire to increase people's awareness of the issues at hand. i hope this book plays a part in encouraging more breeders to raise healthier dogs.
