An excellent survey of the Smart Card industry for 2001. And still very relevant. It describes the state of the art in terms of the technical capabilities of the latest cards. Plus the possible directions of advance suggested by the major players.

The competencies of the latter are also well outlined. So the book is not just for the engineer. Marketing and financial analysts may well find it of use in their fields.

One related type of card, that uses RFID, may be on the verge of huge growth. Its cost of production is steadily falling, and may plummet if it is broadly adopted in a mass market. Interested readers should check this out.
