Smart Fat is written by a team who have worked in the health profession for years and recently changed the way they (and hopefully we) view diets as it relates to fat and protein. Using the latest knowledge (probiotics, avoiding packaged food, cutting out sugar and bread products) they hope to undo the years of misleading information about the importance (and health) of fat and how using it intelligently can lead to better health and weight loss. Note that this book is all about a complete lifestyle change - one the authors feel is necessary for lifelong health rather than temporary, non sustainable short term goals.

The book breaks down as follows: Introduction (The smartest way to live for the rest of your life); Part One: Smart Facts About Smart Fat (A high fat diet for a low fat body, why the smart fat solution will make you lean and healthy, what NOT to eat, Unlearn what you know about food); Part Two: Smart Fat Your Food (The smart fat solution, The thirty day plan of smart fat meals, The smart fat user's guide); Part Three: Beyond Diet, Smart For Life (Smart supplements, Smart living, Smart recipes); References, acknowledgments.

The crux of the book is how we've been told fat is the enemy since the 1970s yet in fact the opposite has been true - that most fats are not only good but needed to properly digest or use nutrients. The book goes over fats thoroughly: which are good and which really are bad and should be avoided. Of note is that by removing fat from so many foods over the decades, the taste was also removed and replaced with chemicals and sugars - causing so many health problems.

Great read!! Our brain has to have cholesterol to function. Low fat and no fat are not good for brain health just as Statin drugs. Low fat, no fat, fat free, and Statin drugs lead to dementia and Alzheimer's.

Low fat and fat free products take the fat out and add tons of sugar to make up for flavor loss. Read your labels!!!

Jonny Bowden is the Nutritional Myth Buster. (I think he was the first to write about the Cholesterol Myth - like - over a decade ago). Steven Masley- a 3-time fellow (American Heart Association, American College of Nutrition, American Academy of Family Physicians.) Both are excellent writers that manage the perfect blend of how and why.

Since I made the shift to eating more "SMART" fats and eliminated the bad fats (and sugars) I've personally experienced a dramatic shift in my energy levels, mental clarity, and cravings. To test my progress, I got some Chocolate therapy from my two favorite therapists (Ben and Jerry) and immediately felt and could measure (on the scale) the change in my progress.

Chapter 4 - Unlearn what you know about food - is mandatory reading. For years I blindly followed "The masses" when I should have been following the "Masley" -

I love this format because it's not overwritten, and can be referenced quickly (Like Chapter 3 - what not to eat).

Excellent summary of the latest research in a practical format for those not working in health care. Clear advice and explanations, and some very nice recipes. The only thing it leaves me wishing for is an entire book of recipes. Implementing the
recommendations relies upon getting into the kitchen. I agree that the healthy microbiome depends upon lifestyle changes....dietary
changes are not the only piece of the puzzle, but they matter quite a lot. Having grown up on pop tarts and fruit loops, I know that change is possible. This book is a great guide as to how to change for the better.

I love this book and can honestly say that in the few weeks that I have been following the Smart Fat guidelines, it is changing my life in wonderful ways.

I am a woman in my fifties and it has become increasingly difficult to control my weight using what I thought was a healthy (very low fat, low simple sugar but moderate complex carbohydrate) diet. I adopted the Smart Fat way of eating and didn't get on a scale for 3 weeks. It is so liberating and fun to be able to eat healthy fats that I have been avoiding for years, (plus lots of protein, and fiber from fruit, vegetables and beans). It is also liberating to not count calories. I do find that I need to adjust down the portion size a little bit because I am petite. I feel great, do not have to starve myself, feel nourished and satisfied and have lots of energy. When I got back on the scale I had lost a half of a pound, not a lot, but I am happy! I am still marveling that I can eat avocados and olive oil and nuts and chocolate and not gain weight.

Another benefit is that my extreme 'dry eye syndrome' has improved dramatically. Which, after years of coping, feels miraculous.
I highly recommend this book.
