Product Description

Designed for children from three years old and up, Smart Gear Balance Bikes allow children to learn the balance and motor skills necessary for biking, safely and naturally, without relying on training wheels. The two-wheel, pedal-free bike allows kids to run the bike along and eventually learn to coast with their feet up. This natural and kid-oriented approach to biking helps kids develop the confidence to balance the bike while moving and liberates them from the crutch of training wheels--so that they can bike earlier.

Coming in renewable birch wood, the Sky Rider Smart Balance Bike features comfortable rubber grips, a cushioned leatherette seat, and a limited steering radius to prevent jackknifing. The pneumatic wheels provide a softer, more resilient ride, and are equipped with longer fill valves to make it easier to secure the pump to the tire. The spoke-less wheels are designed for greater safety--to prevent small legs from getting caught when in motion. A five-position adjustable seat with a height range from 14 to 17 inches allows the bike to grow with your child for years of use. Finally, a unique, integrated carry handle on the frame makes it easy for an adult to carry the bike to and from the car, and also allows a child to push the bike along more easily.

Key Features:
  • Pneumatic (inflatable) rubber tires with extra long tub valves
  • Spoke-less wheel discs
  • Rubberized handle bar grips
  • Limited steering radius
  • Cushioned leatherette seat
  • Unique, integrated carry handle
  • Intended for ages two years old and up
  • Five-position adjustable seat height--from 14 to 17 inches
  • Maximum weight of 60 pounds
  • Dimensions: 35 by 15.5 by 22 inches (LxWxH)
  • Made from replenish-able birch wood
  • Formaldehyde free glue
  • Non-toxic paints and lacquer
  • Carton made from recycled paper with water based ink printing

  • Sustainable Construction: Smart Balance Bikes are made from birch wood that has been harvested from a replenish-able source. The bikes are built using formaldehyde-free glue as well as non-toxic paints and lacquer. The carton the bike comes in, is made from recycled paper with water based ink printing.

About Balance Bikes: Traditional toddler bikes with training wheels don't necessarily train or teach a child how to ride a bicycle. The training wheels do not allow kids as much opportunity to feel the motion-propelled balance of two-wheel biking. By contrast, two-wheel balance bikes allow the child to run the bike along and learn to balance as they develop speed and confidence. As the child grows confident with their forward motion, they begin to lift their feet off of the ground and balance the bike as they coast forward. If the bike starts to fall, kids can regain their balance quickly and easily by dropping their feet to the ground.

I am sending it back for a refund and feel lucky to have had good luck on the pink one.

I also wanted to avoid the bubblecious pink color, as we try to avoid the princess effect... Also, the royal blue paint was chipped already, right out of the box!

The paint and top layer of wood has peeled off almost the entire bike, the tires need to be replaced, and the nut fell off the rear axle.

I gave this to my 2 year old nephew last year. It has been his favorite thing ever since. He was cruising around on it right away and was soon lifting up his feet to coast. As soon as he is tall enough, he'll get a bicycle with pedals and HE WILL NEVER NEED TRAINING WHEELS!!
This was the best gift ever!! It really does teach balance and coordination as well as being tons of fun.

    **update June 2012**
My nephew just got his first pedal bike for his 4th birthday. He used training wheels for about 3 days so that he could get used to the idea of breaking and putting his feet down. Before he developed bad habits, such as leaning on them and not putting his feet down when he stopped, we took off the training wheels. He didn't even notice that they were gone. He is short for his age and depending on his mood, he will still use this bike some days.
I still stand by the "best gift ever" statement.
And the bike is in still in good enough shape to hand down.

    ***Update May 2013
We are about to hand this down to my 2 year old niece!! Can't wait to see her go!!

This bike is very sturdy, well-made and easy to assemble. My 2 year old was delighted to receive it for Christmas. However, it is bigger than expected. The description says for 2-5 years, and my 2 year old is the size of a 3 or 4 year old (35 pounds, 3'1, wears 4T clothes) so I figured the size would be perfect for her. Her tippy toes barely touch the ground so she can't really push off until she grows another inch or 2. So for the time being I just push her, she'll grow into it eventually. We really do love it. The shade of blue is gorgeous.

I purchased this bike for my 3 year old son. He fit perfectly and loves it... which is why it is heartbreaking to tell him now that it is not repairable. The paint and top layer of wood has peeled off almost the entire bike, the tires need to be replaced, and the nut fell off the rear axle. Being that it is not a standard nut, it cannot be fixed. He has only ridden it since the beginning of summer (which is in June where we live)... so 3 months for this price leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. Pro: It doesn't have pedals, so he's good at maintaining his balance.

I ordered two of these, one in pink and one in blue.

The pink was A OK, but the blue was a completely different experience, it was chipped and had a large blister in the wood, threatening to become a huge chip. The rear axle was bent and missing parts that the pink version had. The axels come preassembled. The front wheel wobbled. I am sending it back for a refund and feel lucky to have had good luck on the pink one. I am concerned about toys with chipping paint from China, and don't recall noticing that the producst were from China. It's a great design concept, put can and will find it from a different manufacture.

Our son got this for his 2nd birthday and is now 3 and still loves it!
He learned how to balance it really quickly and has just so much fun with it. Definitely one of his favorite toys.
When we had to contact customer service, they were very friendly and helpful.
We are very happy with the balance bike and would definitely recommend this to other parents!

looks great and easy to put together.. only reason for 4 star and not 5 is they didn't box it to ship it .. they shipped it in its original box which is not designed to ship ... it was fine when it arrived but I can see how people may have issues with this..
