Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3–5—Short chapters illustrated with bright cartoon drawings cover many important concerns and offer explanations of the divorce process. Topics range from how to deal with negative emotions, family changes, and new living arrangements, to tougher issues such as violence and financial troubles. The text has a compassionate tone, and sprinkled throughout are answers to questions that readers might have as well as snippets of advice from girls who have found what works for them. A few write-in quizzes are included. This book promises to be a helpful guide.—Donna Atmur, Los Angeles Public Library

I bought this book, honestly, because I wanted to get up to the $25 for free shipping. I saw the title and thought my daughter might like it. I have been divorced for 2 years and my daughter is 11. I am very careful about the books on divorce, as I have found many to be leaning towards one side of parenting. This book was a great surprise. I read the entire thing before I gave it to her and I couldn't believe how much it related to all the experiences she has been through in the past few years. It covers everything from learning to adapt to living in two houses to how to deal with parents dating other people. It gives great advice on how to deal with parents trying to get you to choose sides. My favorite part is how it balances the rights of a girl to be healthy and happy no matter how difficult the relationship issues are with her parents. The last page is a list of rights that is my favorite part. This book is not just beneficial to my daughter, but I got a lot out of reading it. Sometimes I'm not sure how to deal with situations on her level. This book gives me the words to say to explain, but not burden her with adult issues. I have ordered another "Smart Girls Guide" book for Christmas. Perfect for upper elementary to middle school age.

My daughter (age 9) was recommended these books after taking an Etiquette class. We ordered just about all the SMART GIRLS Books. My daughter saw this book and asked for it specifically. Her father and I are divorced. She sat down and read this book start to finish. We talked about many of the issues and she loves the book very much. It is great for her to have this book to refer to about any of our family situations and the best way for her to handle it.

I recommend ALL the Smart Girls Books. They are SO GREAT! Very helpful with advice for the every day experiences that a girl has to deal with. The advice is Fantastice and worded exactly how a young girl needs it to be! I have a group of girls that I watch for the summer, and we are all going to read the books together as a group. I HIGHLY recommend these books. From divorce, to grooming, to friendship troubles, family relationships. All these books are great!

This book is a great resource for girls who are dealing with their parents' divorce. I would also recommend this book as a great resource for parents -- it's important to remember what divorce looks like and feels like from the perspective of a kid.

Although my ex and I had divorced about 5 years ago, my oldest, who's now 11, didn't seem like she had dealt with it in that time. Her dad & I had not actually explained the process or supported her much during it because we had assumed she was too young & it didn't seem to really bother her. Recently she's been starting to seem very one-sided about things and it really seemed to me as if she didn't understand some of what she was feeling or exactly knew how to handle what she could understand. I bought this book as kind of a last ditch effort since she didn't want to see a counselor (or talk to me), and to my surprise, its made a bit of a difference so far. I read it over first & liked that it was really geared and worded for girls about her age, without taking sides or making the reader feel as if maybe she were wrong or didn't need to understand what was going on. It was also shipped very quickly, which was a great surprise for me. I would definitely recommed this book to anyone girl or parent in this same kind of predicament.

Great read for a young girl dealing with her parents divorce. I purchased this for my 12 year old niece right in at the beginning of the divorce and it helped her a lot. Explained a lot of the issues and she had no problem discussing what she learned from this book.

Remarkable book - although I'm not overly fond of the other "Smart Girl's Guides" (sorry!). We would read a chapter each night (my husband and I are going through a divorce), and my 13 year old daughter would ask to read an extra chapter (or two), and she looked forward to this time each night. Her 14 year old brother also asked to listen in, because the content was so helpful.

This book opened up excellent discussions, and is written from a perspective to encourage and empower the children while being respectful of other people and their feelings, too. Highly recommended - wish they made a "Smart Guy's" version!

While it was painful to read this book to my kids, it brought up so many issues that we are experiencing during our divorce. I can't say it was a joy to read, but I can see us taking it off the shelf for years to come and I've recommended it to other families in the midst of a divorce.
