American Girl has hit another home run with the book 'A Smart Girls' Guide to Staying Home Alone'. The book is well written for both youth (my daughter is 11) and parents, not only was it helpful for her to read it, but reading the book made me realize that there really were some areas we hadn't talked about much.

Her favorite part of the book (and it might be one of mine as well) - is a pull-out section in the back where she can write her after school schedule (how much time for homework, are TV and internet allowed, etc.), a list of emergency numbers, and general house rules.

It makes staying home alone a little less scary, but doesn't overshadow the fact that a girl (or boy!) needs to be cautious. Really an excellent find.

Have a tween that needs to prepare for her older years and is interested in being able to stay home alone, even if she is not ready for a couple more years, this is a great book. It builds a sense of security with a great plan for staying safe while alone, a check list of must have items (even some you wouldn't typically think of but are brilliant). I also love how it explains the maturity levels required and helps to set those guidelines of when you will both know she is ready. I told my daughter, when I notice you can do things without being told like brush your teeth twice a day, throw out your trash without forgetting etc. then I will know you are trust worthy alone too. In a society where privileges are given for reaching a numerical age, it is refreshing to see one that depends of maturity and trust and responsibly. Also helped me to feel more comfortable about leaving her, when she is older. I believe in teaching before they are ready, so they know what is expected. But also helpful if she is already old enough too. It would take about a week (for a busy family) to go through it and thoroughly explain with your daughter how the book relates to your expectations.

I bought this for my son and forewarned him it was "for girls" (gasp!). 99% of the book is good information for any child who is ready for independence and to start staying home alone.

Well thought out, well written, and well presented. Most important, my daughter loves them all and reads the books cover to cover. In many cases, she reads them over and over. I sat down to flip through this book and ended up reading all the way myself.

Practical and real advice presented in a way that a young lady wants to read and absorb.

What more could you ask for? Worth every penny.

Geared more for staying home alone after school. Has practical advice and good ideas. My 10 year old enjoyed it and took the safety advice to heart because it did not come just from me.

My 13 year old granddaughter gives this book a 2 thumbs up. She has only recently become comfortable enough to stay at home alone, and says this book has helped her a lot and given her more confidence to handle things without having to call for help. Thanks American Girl for thinking of this subject to write about!
