5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for girls new to being home alone, December 14, 2009

American Girl has hit another home run with the book 'A Smart Girls' Guide to Staying Home Alone'. The book is well written for both youth (my daughter is 11) and parents, not only was it helpful for her to read it, but reading the book made me realize that there really were some areas we hadn't talked about much.

Her favorite part of the book (and it might be one of mine as well) - is a pull-out section in the back where she can write her after school schedule (how much time for homework, are TV and internet allowed, etc.), a list of emergency numbers, and general house rules.

It makes staying home alone a little less scary, but doesn't overshadow the fact that a girl (or boy!) needs to be cautious. Really an excellent find.

Well thought out, well written, and well presented. Most important, my daughter loves them all and reads the books cover to cover. In many cases, she reads them over and over. I sat down to flip through this book and ended up reading all the way myself.

Practical and real advice presented in a way that a young lady wants to read and absorb.

What more could you ask for? Worth every penny.

I bought this for my son and forewarned him it was "for girls" (gasp!). 99% of the book is good information for any child who is ready for independence and to start staying home alone.

My 10 year old daughter loved this book, lots of great tips that she took very seriously. I feel much better leaving her home for short periods of time now.
