5.0 out of 5 stars Simple but effective design..., July 12, 2009
This review is from: Smart-Holder Saw Horse/Wood Holder (Misc.)
The Smart Holder is available under several different manufacturers' names (my personal model is a Remington), but as far as I can tell, they're all the same design. I finally got to try mine out today with a pile of old logs and fallen limbs, and it worked quite well. Holds the woods well off the ground and makes it much easier to chop up. You have to be careful with twisted limbs -- sometimes they can turn in the holder if you don't have 'em pinched in there solid. I also found that the saw's chain can pull a limb or log toward you, but if you stand in sort of a boxer's stance and brace the front of of the limb with your lead leg while cutting, it works just fine. Holder folds down and transports easily, though I wouldn't want to carry it too far, it would get a little heavy. I got mine for about $75 after a little shopping around. Well worth the price.

Yeah, this is a really cool tool. It arrives already assembled and to set up you just need to turn two wing nuts... and get a wrench. It's extremely sturdy and unbelievably simple to load with logs of small to fairly large diameter. The leverage is great. Teeth bit right in, allowing you to work this pretty much one-handed. Highly recommended.

This product works extremely well. I was a sceptic when I ordered the wood holder but have put it to good use lately with all the post storm clean ups I've been doing. I've never liked cutting up the small diameter material (I don't have a chipper so I burn in the wood stove) - typically I'd pin down on the ground partly over another piece of wood with one foot to keep my blade out of the dirt. Sometimes the smaller pieces would ride up or even kick back at you no matter how careful you were. This holder keeps the material to be cut at a more comfortable level and very stable providing you take the second or two it takes to lock the piece in place in the swingarm teeth. What surprised me the most was how well it holds the larger diameter mini logs also. I find myself piling up similiar diameter pieces and then zipping through them with ease without making any adjustments for diameter then going to the next size range. After using the smart-holder a short time you will get a feel for what sizes will be held securely without having to adjust the swing arm (which is quite simple and not a big deal anyhow). After cutting a "log" down, the last piece in the holder does release quite easily. I like to stack the wood to be cut on top of something close to the level of the jaws and get into a rythm of loading, locking (usually a slight push down) and cutting. I do believe this system to be a much safer and more efficient way of getting this chore done. I wear steel toed boots, protective chaps, helmet (with face shield and hearing protection) which I'd recommend to anyone regardless of how you approach this thankless task. The holder does fold up and transport easily and appears like it will hold up to serious use. This tool in my opinion is well worth the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars good product, but you have choices, December 15, 2011
This review is from: Smart-Holder Saw Horse/Wood Holder (Misc.)
My husband wanted this item and it's worked great for him. We ordered one just like it on Sears.com and avoided the shipping fees by having it delivered to our local store. Looks and works exactly the same.

This device makes sawing much easier by the way it holds the limbs/logs. The adjustment for the size limb is very easy to change. And the constuction is solid.

4.0 out of 5 stars Safety issue resolved, November 20, 2011

This review is from: Smart-Holder Saw Horse/Wood Holder (Misc.)
I live in New Mexico and mostly in my area we have juniper tree/bush is our primary wood available (high demand low supply) in our desert country. What this means is using most of the tree and being efficient--not much waste. This requires using the smaller branches that might otherwise be discarded or ground up for mulch. As you know working smaller diameter pieces (1-4 inches) for wood burning stoves can be tricky. When cutting the smaller branches and limbs chain-saw-grabs can pull and jerk the wood towards the operator. This safety issue is resolved with the 'Smart-Holder'. It worked great, light portable, gets the wood up off the ground, two wing nuts to assemble. My only suggestion would be the designers should have added a lower and upper jaw tooth on the frame up post side. This would help greatly in grabbing the smaller pieces. Smaller pieces can fall between teeth or perhaps only one tooth is engaged. As always use a sharp chain, experiment with getting your RPM (trigger control) up before you begin your cut and use the up post to form a three-point-pinch (upper jaw, lower jaw, up post) to hold the wood. I found easing into your cut at higher RPM's/inertia in itself reduces chain saw grabs.

Easy to use. Keeps smaller branches and logs from jumping around on the ground. Increases safety of small limb cutting. Great product.

I was going to build a wooden sawhorse for firewood cutting when I stumbled into this on the internet. I ordered one from Amazon, and it works great. Sets up in about a minute and is very stable--an ingenious design. Holds all sorts of straight and crooked logs in a variety of diameters up to 9" and the teeth in the jaws hold everything steady while you saw away. Then the last piece flops out with a little upward flip, and you're ready to insert the next log. Jaws are easily adjusted for various diameter logs, and hold everything tight. I really like it. And when you're done, it folds up flat for easy storage. Nice!
