5.0 out of 5 stars Best bang for the buck
Finally. Smart Parts has done it. A professional grade electronic marker thats very affordable. What gets the attention, is that this less-than-$300 gun can shoot 17 balls per second, and has 4 modes of shooting: semi-auto (shoots once for each pull of the trigger), rebound (shoots once for the pull of the trigger, and another time when its released), 3 round burst (3...

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy
I bought this used Smart Parts Ion, knowing they are decent guns. Mine came shipped with a broken board. I overlooked this knowing since it was used it would have some problems. First match I have with this gun all the o-rings break and drain all the air from my tank. Piece of crap.
Do your self a favor and find a Proto Rail, I have one now and it works amazing.

Finally. Smart Parts has done it. A professional grade electronic marker thats very affordable. What gets the attention, is that this less-than-$300 gun can shoot 17 balls per second, and has 4 modes of shooting: semi-auto (shoots once for each pull of the trigger), rebound (shoots once for the pull of the trigger, and another time when its released), 3 round burst (3 quick shots in one trigger pull), and full auto (Hold trigger down and balls shoot up to 10 balls per sec, not 17). 17 bps can only be reached in semi auto. Also, whats needed, is the Anti Chop system, and the Ion includes the Break Beam Vision Eyes, to insure you'll never chop paint when shooting 17 bps. The trigger is also completely adjustable, to fit you style (can be made unbelievably light for quick shots). The gun itself, is very durable and handy. Its ball detents last ten times more than the regular detents on other guns, and the Ion is extremely gas efficient. And just released are some different colored body kits for the Ion. Allowing the owner to change the complete look of the gun between games/days, to fit their look or liking.
With its easy disassembly, speed, durability, customability, and price, I find the Ion the best buy in the paintball world today.

5.0 out of 5 stars The paintballers Dream, April 14, 2006
This is the best marker i have ever owned. It shoots at a max of 17 balls per second without the additional upgraded curcuit board. Unless you want to spend 300 dollars on paintballs every time you play, that is a perfect speed. It is very reliable, WILL NOT CHOP PAINT, and is very compact. It has two little eyes in the chamber that see the ball when it falls in so it know the perfect time to shoot. It has very little shootdown, but it is there.. The only problem in my opinion is the feed neck which is replaceable for $20-$40. Also I would recommend an aftermarket barrel. I use a teardrop 14" barrel for $45. If you are feeling like a spender, try a Freak Barrel Kit so you can use any sized paint. Both of the two are by Smart Parts just like the ion. The ion is very air efficiant. You will get 1200-1400 shots from a 68ci/4500psi tank. You should not use co2, but if you must, get an antisiphon tube so the ion won't freeze. Also, if you plan on shooting over 5 balls per second, get an electric/agitating hopper/loader. I use an Empire B Reloader, you can also use a Halo B for almost the same speed. An Evlution II hopper can feed 17 balls per second in the perfect conditions, so, if you use a Evlution II, you should lower the ion's set speed just a little bit so the hopper can keep up. In conclusion, I feel like doin' some target practice in the back yard!

4.0 out of 5 stars the only reason i gave it 4 (this is an O2 only marker), August 10, 2006
So be prepared to buy a O2 tank for it as well which will cost a little more then a CO2 tank. the ion leave's you wanting more!!! after all the upgrades have been made you want more. if your a speedballer like me that is. yeah, stock out of the box the barrel is not the best. thats why there are upgrade parts. the freak barrel kit is the best upgrade for this marker out there. and if you plan on investing $$$ into this marker. your next jump would be the shocker. so you wont lose the money you have invested in the ion. the freak barel, roller trigger, blackheart board, clamp style feed neck, laser (no chop) eyes. those are just some of the great ugreades for the ion. if you go with the shocker next you'll have to ditch the color pref body kit. but its a small loss. a box of good paint costs more then that anyway. but all and all. if your someone who is serious about paintball and dose not want to waste time, money, and countless efforts on a cheap piece of junk from a local wal-mart or sporting goods store in a mall (HINT TO PARENTS BUYING THERE KID A PAINTBALL MARKER) then the ion is the way to go. it can be transformed to a field scenaro marker just as fast as it can go back to a speed ball marker. (kits sold seperitly) there is only one MAJOR flaw with the ion. and you may need to have one of the pros out on the field look at it after the 5th or 6th time its used. and thats the internal air exhaust. the tube likes to leak. causing you to lose air out on the field. (just a reminder.....THIS IS AN O2 ONLY GUN)so losing air is not a good thing out on the field. but a quick $20.00 QEV upgrade will fix that. and it will also give you you more shots per tank. so your not always going back to the tanks for a refill. and the recomended hopper for the ion would be a EMPIRE HALO. with its automatic feed system it can keep up with the ion's rate of fire.

all and all. if your starting paintball as a sport? first get a little cheepy gun and go play ....to see if you can hack the sometimes painful ping of the paintballs. then if you fall in love with the sport then get this ion as your first serious marker.

i hope this info was useful to you. thank you for reading.

truly,
an avid paintball player

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as it get, January 12, 2007
By
I have been playing paintball for 6 months by now, and I previously owned a Spyder Pilot ACS. I felt that I need a gun that allow me to progress as long as I practice. The Smart Parts ION is a gun that is most used by noobs, but that doesn't means that you have to be a noob to use it. This gun is highly upgradeable, I think it is the gun that has more aftermarket upgrades. You can add upgrades as you become a better player so it can keep up with and you don't need a new gun. With each upgrade you feel you have a new gun. But you don't need to upgrade it to use it.

Out-of-the-box is accurate, consistant and do not kick when shooting (compared to a Spyder). I have only one word to describe it... SMOOTH!!
The only bad thing (Out-of-the-box) is its feed neck, try to get a new one with the gun, maybe a trinity mini or smart parts q-lock. I have a Halo B loader and it is too thick for the feed neck so I sanded the feed neck untill it fitted, but you can also sand the loader (most common solution). Then I bought a Trinity Mini Lo-Rise feed neck.

Another advice... don't use CO2 with this gun, it will freeze every o-ring inside it or even burn the board, because one of the valves releases its gas waste to the board area, maybe for better temperature to the board, but just use nitro (hpa, compressed air), not CO2.

If you have the money.. BUY IT!! IT WORTH EVERY CENT!!

5.0 out of 5 stars very nice gun, November 5, 2006
I have been using this gun for about 4 months now and i am amazed at its performance. I would recomend getting a better barrel for it, but other then that you can do whatever you want with it. I have also been using an anti-siphon tank on this gun and I havn't had any problems with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Gun..Great Price..Buy It..., September 30, 2006
First off..This gun is awesome..If you are going to buy one make sure you have compresssed air because co2 will be the end of your ion. The only down side to having to use air is that the tanks are alittle spendy.. But really it isnt that bad. I reccomend that your first upgrade is a qev. this will save alot of air and it is only 20 bucks. Make sure you get the smart parts one because it is the easitest to install. I also reccomend a drop forward on/off asa. The air tanks are big and alot heavier than co2 tanks and if you arent used to it it is hard to keep all that weight up all the time. A locking feedneck is always a good idea too. I also recccomend an electronic hopper. The ion is meant to shoot fast and if you dont have one you will not see the full potential of your ion. The ion also has a break beam eye system. the gun simply will not fire unless there is a ball in the chamber. I havent broke a ball yet and i shoot really fast. Some other upgrades you might want to do. A new regulator. I have a dye hyper 2 and it is very consistent. I couldnt ask for more. A new barrel. I have a stiffi 16 inch and it is dead on. It works best with premium or marballizer paintballs. There are many more upgrades you can do and i have upgraded my ion to the max and it is sweet. I highly reccomend this gun. I love my ion. YOU WILL TOO! so if you are looking for a cheap fast gun. its as simple as buy an ion.

48ci 3000psi Guerilla HPA Tank (49.99)
Viewloader 18bps Loader (29.99)

Well, I bought this gun off Amazon a month ago and just used it for the first time yesterday... This marker is the best gun I've ever used. (Invert Mini, Proto SLG, etc.) I hit 15 enemies and only got out 4 times (all head shots) this gun was extremely accurate! I recommend this to ANY entry level or intermediate player that's looking for a great, accurate, fast, and most of all affordable marker.
Bottom Line: BUY THIS GUN!

A Kid's Review
i was lookin for a new gun under $300 because im only 13 and dont have $1000 to spend on a dye dmc or an angel, i went to a pro shop bout an gour away. i asked if they have a gun for uner $300 . the first thing they grabbed off the wall was the ion. i was lookin at it fort awhil. walkin the trigger and noticed it has a very VERY light trigger pull. i was lookin at it and noticed there was a sticker on the asa that says and i quote : must used compressed air, do not use c02. well i baught a center flag 47/3000 tank for $90. but when i got home, i skipped almost every shot because i forgot to buy an electronic hopper. so i would reccomend a halo b if u shoot fast or have any passion to up your ion in the future.
