Big Bag Bed Original

From the Makers of Smart Pots

Setting up a raised bed garden can be time consuming, back breaking and expensive. The Big Bag Bed is simple to set up, with no installation required. Just unfold, fill and plant! Raised bed kits or purchasing lumber to create a raised bed can cost hundreds of dollars, plus you have to install it. The Big Bag Bed is very inexpensive and also reusable. Expect at least 3-5 years use with the Big Bag Bed.

The Big Bag Bed is constructed from the same porous fabric as Smart Pots. This material dissipates excess heat and encourages excess water to evaporate.

The fabric has a unique ability to air prune the roots, enhancing the plants' ability to create strong healthy roots. As roots grow they soon reach the container walls causing the roots to air prune, which also causes a natural, fibrous root structure. In hard sided containers like plastic or wood, these roots immediately start circling. A plant’s roots naturally grow laterally, penetrating the earth for nutrients and water; natural roots do not circle.

  • No installation or construction required. Just unfold, fill & plant!
  • Circular shape allows you to reach the center from any position
  • Weatherproof and reusable. It’ll last for years!
  • Warms quickly in the spring and releases excess heat in the summer
  • Provides excellent drainage and won’t hold excess water
  • Air prunes the roots which causes a better root system. Healthy roots, healthy plant!
  • Discourages ground pests such as gophers and moles

Customer Reviews

I planted beans, lettuces, tomatoes, and carrots.

Filled these beds with a mix of compost, vermiculite, peat moss, coconut coir, worm castings, rock dust, and some boogiebrew products.

This is a great option for growing in small backyards when you don't have the time or inclination to build a raised bed.

Saw John recommend this on his growingyourgreens channel on youtube, and I just HAD to get it! Oh yes, it rocks!!! Super sturdy, HUGE, and just the right height. I don't like those fabric "pots" (this is a fabric "bed") that is unnecessarily so tall and wasteful of soil....THIS is perfect.

As per his rec, I did 1/3 coco coir, 1/3 vermiculite, 1/3 organic compost, some azomite, and my veges are going wild~!!!!!

I just love these, I bought a few at first in all sizes including the Raised Bed. We live in the Hill Coutnry with a lot of limestone and rocks that make it hard to dig in the places you may want to plant. We have done many raised beds, and this is a great addition to our efforts. I use the small pots for all my herbs and they are doing great, I also did tomato plants and they are thriving and producing. It also allows me to just dump in the dirt where I want the flowers and plant away....no need to ask my Garden Buddy (Hubby) for his help or wait until he has time! Ladies, I know you understand :-)

I bought my bag from smarpots.com and had to pay $10 for shipping. If I would have known that Amazon was selling them I would have bought it here.

It was so easy to start. I started my bed last week with a mix of compost, garden soil, and potting soil mix. I planted beans, lettuces, tomatoes, and carrots. I'm using the square foot gardening technique. My beans and lettuces are already sprouting I'm so excited. After this garden bed is more established I'm planning on starting another one and will definitely buy it from Amazon.

I bought a few 10 gallon bag pots to start my sweet potatoes. Can't wait for them to arrive.

Don't hesitate, start your garden today!

If I could post pictures here you'd see why I love this Big Bag Bed! I live in a rental home and can't dig up the yard for a garden so I decided to use this. The one thing I couldn't find it how much soil I was going to need to fill the garden. Well I used 10 of the 1 Cu. Ft. gardening soil and mixed it with half a bag of peet moss and it made a great mix for growing veggies. I would probably use 2 or 4 more bags of dirt next time as I wasn't able to fill the bag all the way up to the top, I'm shy about 3 inches or so.

The bag does a great job at keeping moisture in the dirt for the plant and we've got huge tomato plants, carrots, cucumbers, and squash growing in it now. It was easy to setup and fill and seems to be holding up very well over the past month or so. We just put it on the ground over the grass and didn't prep anything.

I also did the price calculation and to build a wood box to match the size you would spend about double. If it wasn't so late in the season I'd buy another one and plant more stuff. I'll certainly be getting another one for next year!

It takes a whole lot of potting soil to fill it up, but it's exactly what I needed for this situation. We were given a lengthy "no-plant" list AFTER we signed the lease and moved in. So everything I plant is either coming with me when we move or is an annual. And since the owners prefer to use toxins everywhere, I wanted my food grown in soil I knew something about. This has the advantages of a raised bed without the expense or hassle of tearing something apart when we leave. I plan on buying at least two more next year.

Updating: The bed is now growing a lush salad garden with winter greens just getting their 3rd leaves. This is one of the absolute best purchases I have made in awhile.

No complaints--just open, fill, and plant. Couldn't be easier. And if we move we can just fold it up and take it with us!

Grew tomatoes and peppers in this last year and it held up well.....I have it covered now and will replant this spring. It takes quite a bit of soil, but well worth it as it makes a very rich garden in a small space...It held 6 large pepper plants and 8 tomato...Bountiful kitchen garden....May purchase another for this year to add more vegetables...Good purchase!
