Book Description

June 1, 2011
Let's face it; everyone has clutter to some degree or another! It's how you deal with the clutter that makes the difference between conquering your clutter and allowing your clutter to conquer you.

In her book, If I'm So Smart, Why Can't I Get Rid of This Clutter?, author and life coach Sallie Felton, walks you through the practical and organizational strategies that make it easy to stay organized; but this book goes deeper and uncovers the hidden reasons why it can be so hard to get clutter free and stay that way.

Her book includes:

Getting Started Tools - The first step to conquering clutter is breaking it up into more manageable chunks - literally and metaphorically. These tools will get you heading in the right direction without feeling overwhelmed and defeated.

Practical Tools - There is simply no way to end clutter without getting rid of some stuff. What's more, you'll need to find techniques for dealing with new stuff as it arrives. These are tools you'll come back to again and again.

Feeling Tools - Oh if only clutter were just about stuff and storage solutions! Things would be so much easier. The real challenge is learning to let go of emotional clutter. These tools will show you how, one heartbeat at time.

Motivation Tools - Everyone needs help reaching their goals and maintaining their new status. One way to get really motivated is to understand the true cost of clutter.

Belief Tools
- The tools will show you how to unearth the beliefs you have about yourself and teach you how to turn the negative, self-defeating ones into empowering affirmations. How will that help you keep your house clean? You might be surprised to find out!

Self-Care Tools - Too often we push ourselves, day in and day out, to do more, give more, achieve more. To what end? If we don't make time to take care of ourselves, to re-energize and re-vitalize ourselves we make it impossible to do, give or achieve our best. These tools put you in the driver's seat of your own life.

Future Tools - These tools put a plan in place for bringing life to your vision and creating the future you want. We'll do this in a way that builds confidence, makes room for life's unpredictable ways and sets you up for nothing less than success.

4.0 out of 5 stars A clutter coach speaks; I listen April 26, 2012
Format:Paperback
Like many readers, I off the New Year thinking self-improvement thoughts rooted in the awareness that some things need to change. When given the opportunity to read about clutter, therefore, I said a quick yes. It's the New Year. A fresh start. And clutter is anything but fresh. Clutter is so yesterday.

Hamilton, Mass., resident and life coach of some renown Sallie Felton asserts that there are three kinds of clutter. To successfully clean your desktop, unfortunately, you must attend to the mental and emotional clutter as well. And though there are plenty of tips for how to make room for your car in your garage that's currently jammed with cardboard boxes filled with who knows what, you must do a little wading in the personal muck as well.

Felton sometimes calls herself a clutter coach. She wants you to face your clutter holistically. She wants you to understand why you're attracted to the idea of a clutter-free existence. Your answer will inform your mission statement. Are you de-cluttering to learn how to let go of the past, she asks? Do you want to move more fully into the present? Your answer will enable your effort.

Perhaps this is the perfect gift for a hoarder, since clutter sits atop a heap of personal issues that confound any effort to organize. For those of us who may secretly hoard writing pens or sticky notes -- discreet and manageable hoarding, we can move on to this book's main intention: the eradication of clutter.

You will have to do a bit of digging to get to the good stuff, but it's there.

E-mail is a kind of clutter, for instance, that has serious ramifications. Clean it regularly or jam up your home or work computer. Felton has good advice. Stay on top of that "unsubscribe" button.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Eat/Pray/Love for the rest of us ~ September 27, 2011
By Suzanna
Format:Paperback
Surprisingly funny and tender. Picture this: A successful media personality, mother and wife, whose happy and drama-free life unravels, allowing her clear vision of how her mental/emotional/material clutter is holding her prisoner.

Through her journals, she creates (and shares) the tools to weed out the toxic relationships, unhealthy patterns, even the dusty old sentimental 'stuff' we all collect. No pasta, no exciting trips to India and no sexy Greek men, but sometimes it's the mundane manifestations of years of the crap in the closets, the passive/aggressive relationship with family members, and the upwardly inching scale that teach us our biggest lessons.

3.0 out of 5 stars Helpful but not wow May 6, 2012
By Kalina

I read bit more than half of that book. The beginning was very good, made me really think about all the stuff that I have myself and how to get rid of it. It introduces clutter cleaning strategies, and there is also a lot about the author's struggle with her clutter, which makes the book more personal and interesting. After that however, she goes into details how to organize certain places and rooms in the house, there is a chapter for every room - and this is quite boring and repetitive and on top I didn't find it useful for my particular situation. Nevertheless, the book inspired me to start uncluttering my own house, which is going very well so far, so I would recommend reading it for people who are starting to collect information on the topic of clutter and getting rid of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roll Up Your Sleeves Sallie Style And Get It Done! March 23, 2012
Format:Paperback
Sallie is smart! She will inspire you to follow her lead. Yes, she publicly walked the walk and decluttered her own life then shared her journey and understanding with those of us weighted down with stuff. Sallie help beat the stuffing out of me and my stacks, bags, boxes, sheds, shelves, closets, basement and attic. Right, no more toys in the attic, bats in the belfry and I now walk up-right--released of the burden of my excessive stuffing. She taught me to keep the memories but release the junk. Now, I can find my tools, manuals,Christmas decorations and business records. How can this be? I was a hoarder in the making--a collector's collector. Yep, Sallie motivated me. She encouraged, explained and gave me examples to straighten my crooked and jam-packed life. It's a logical process replete with assurances that we all have messy tendencies but there is salvation for all. Even me! It took a gentle nudge to write up a plan and and practical accountability measures to monitor and maintain the plan. Does she have a magic wand or broom or shovel or file cabinet? No, but for me it was her simple admonishment to "Start Where You Stand" that got me going. She can help you too and you'll love her and her book! Clear your head, clean your basement and carry out the excess belongings. Now if she could only do something about my dogs...

5.0 out of 5 stars Clutter Combatting Tools March 13, 2012
By Melissa
Format:Kindle Edition
Admit it, we all have clutter. Guests may not notice it, your spouse may not see it, but it's there. You have a drawer, closet, car, or area of your life filled with clutter, don't you? Are you an otherwise successful individual with a `dirty little secret'? Sallie Felton is here with a tool belt of wit and wisdom to help you get rid of your clutter in her latest book titled "Why Can't I Get Rid of This Clutter?" Felton's book hit's the spot better than a tall glass of lemonade on a hot summer's day. Her book speaks to the inner mess-maker/hoarder within each of us. She offers reasonable suggestions (ie: organize the pile of photos of the children's last 14 birthdays, donate items to a local charity, finish the filing system, etc...) and helps with simple exercises that changes the readers mindset about items they previously could not part with. Felton has her reader ask themselves: Do I LOVE it? Do I NEED it? Is it USEFUL? Talk about an arsenal filled with clutter combatting tools! You'll no longer be asking: "If I'm So Smart - why can't I get rid of this clutter?"
