4.0 out of 5 stars Best handwriting app on the kindle fire January 9, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased 7notes on sale for $5 (was waiting for my stylus to arrive in the mail) and I would have gladly paid the $10.

The app is best used with a good stylus (I use a Verteks Black) and a little practice is required to get the hang of writing on this screen. I was hoping to be able to replace my notebooks with my kindle and keep all of my school note taking in one place. This, I can safely say I will now definitely do.

Handwriting is smooth and easy once you can find your comfortable writing speed. I am normally a fast and sloppy handwriter and had to slow myself down a little, but I am more than comfortable writing at this speed.

I rate this app a 4/5, but only because I wish it had a way to organize your notes. currently, all are displayed on one long list. There exists a limited search function though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful notebook replacement. December 31, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
For the price that you pay for this app, I feel like it does the buyer justice. When I bought this app my thought behind it was towards how this could come handy in the classroom environment. Think about, a note taking app that responds to the same responsive flicks of your hand the same way it does with a pen. If only it were that easy though. There's a lot to this app, many options from spacing to letter size and colour.

There's plenty here to satisfy your basic needs but you see that's not the problem I find here. I feel like the app becomes difficult when it comes to actually taking notes with your fingers. I don't feel like it leaves enough space for writing the notes. The room it leaves you doesn't even cover half the page which makes me think how quick is this compared to actually taking notes on paper.

But I feel like this can be good and I'm sure it will only improve from here. I recommend this app for anyone who wants an alternative for writing and note taking.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good 3x5 notecard replacement (UPDATED) January 8, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
Update 4/25/2012 - I've reduced a star since there have not been any updates at all since I downloaded it early on. Makes me wonder how much the developer cares about maintaining it. I am too annoyed at the default behavior of putting you in a new note every time (my original review didn't like this and they have not addressed) so I've stopped using this app in favor of FreeNote+ for my 3x5 replacement. FreeNote+ does not have recognition, but I've never used that. This is still a nice enough app, but lack of new features has led me to drop my original 4-star assessment.

Original review:

My particular situation has me writing most of my notes these days on 3x5 note cards, and for that scenario this program appears that it will serve its purpose very well. In other words, short bits of writing--bullet list kind of stuff, brief and to the point. I personally would not consider this in a situation where I would write extensive amounts of text or even notes from a long meeting or class that would require a lot of note taking--and am not rating it in that light because I just wouldn't use a 7" tablet and stylus in that way regardless of the software package.

I like that you can use any or all of handwriting recognition, soft keyboard, and scribbles (which can be converted later if you want) in the same note. I can't say for sure whether this will replace my trusty note cards, but I am going to give it a try and if it doesn't work I suspect it will be more to do with the form factor of a tablet than this program. The recognition is impressive (to me at least) but I expect that I will have to train my handwriting a little bit to be more effective. I really like that you can turn the recognition off if you just want something quick and dirty, and then you can convert later if you even care to. In my case, I never have the option to convert my 3x5 note cards, so that's a luxury as far as I am concerned.

It forces you to use a graffiti-like writing space underneath the actual notes on the screen (per screen shots) but I think that is probably necessary given the 7" limitation. It effectively scales down your writing or converted text (to a configurable size) in the note area to maximize what you see versus what you write. I would call this a necessary compromise, or at least a valid one for which the application shouldn't be negatively rated IMO. I personally don't feel that a capacitive screen/stylus combination is precise enough to fit inline on that small of a screen and some tradeoff is necessary. Regardless, it is a conscious design decision on their part and it is made clear in the video and screen shots so don't be surprised.

I won't give it 5 stars (yet at least) as it is not great as a note organizer. One example--every time you start the app, it puts you in a new note. I'd want a configurable option of either (a) go into a new note, (b) open the last opened note, or (c) start in the note list which would let me do what I want. This small enhancement might be enough in my eyes to bump it to a 5. That said, I'm sure a more savvy user would want things like encryption or integration with more apps/sites or more UI preferences. I personally favor simple tools.

Only other thing I can say I don't like is that it is a little clumsy if you want to fix a mistake (either due to poor penmanship or incorrect recognition) after you've committed it to the text area. As an example, you need to insert a space in order to have it accept your text into the note, which doesn't work well if you are trying to correct a letter in the middle of a word--you have to hit space then backspace--if there is a better way, it is not obvious. I'd like to see this improved in a later update, but I'm sure I could optimize myself around this. It really does make the handwriting recognition part of it a little sub-optimal, particularly when you do it after the fact and may have to edit the results of recognizing sloppy handwriting.

Making the memo organization a little more effective and streamlining the editing process would make this a strong 5 in my book, so I am holding out hope!
