No power cord needed
Both FireWire and USB 2.0 models are bus powered, meaning they can be powered directly through the FireWire or USB 2.0 cable used to connect them to your computer. For portability, this is the utmost in conveniencejust plug it in and start using it! For configurations that do not supply sufficient cable power, FireLite can operate from an optional AC adapter.
High performance
FireLites high performance hard drive mechanisms and electronics provide outstanding data transfer speeds with either FireWire or USB 2.0. For most software applications, you can use FireLite as an internal hard drive, then unplug it and take it with you when youre done!
USB 2.0 or FireWire models
FireLite models are equipped with either a USB 2.0 or FireWire (1394A) connection. USB models support USB 2.0 High Speed operation (up to 480Mbits/sec) and they will also work with USB 1.1 ports at slower transfer rates. FireWire models (supporting up to 400Mbits/sec) feature two ports for daisy-chaining several FireWire peripherals together.
Plug and Play
For recent Windows and Macintosh operating system releases, such as Windows XP, Windows 2000, Window Me, and Mac OS X, no driver installation is required. I work as an author and seminar/training class instructor. Due to this I travel a lot and am frequently asked to review hardware. I have tested Maxtor, Seagate and these SmartDisk FireLite models. In my opinion, the FireLite is the best external hard drive for those who travel because of its small size and light weight.The drive does not have the shock resistance of the larger cases and this should be kept in mind. You'll want to be careful with it as evidenced by another review elsewhere related to these devices. My biggest suggestion: Don't consider any USB drive a permanent backup solution for your data. They are just hard drives. If you have any data that is important to you, it should always be in two, or more, places at the same time. This is true with any storage medium. I already own three external hard-drives (Home, Office, Media) and this Firelite HD is by far the best. I love the fact that I can connect it to my PowerBook and it draws power from the firewire cable. It is small and I carry it with my laptop wherever I go.I doen't make any noise and doesn't heat up. I can't think of any negative comments about the product.

This is the utmost for gamers and/or music lovers with lots of CD's. With world turning electronic now-a-days DJ'ing is easy with a 100GB hard drive and 50,000 songs loaded. I have around 35,000 and they easily fit on here. For those individuals who go on long trips (ie. military) this is perfect. All your music is sitting into your pocket and easily accessible. You can even take thousand's of picture's of your family and friends with you and it so convenient. I recommend this drive to anyone technicians, mechanics, lawyers, programmers, etc. Why pay so much for a 2GB-4GB thumbdrive when you can have a 100GB for the same price? And the cost is just the same!
