From the Inside Flap

With short-term responsibilities and distractions crowding our everyday lives, it’s not easy to focus on saving and investing for retirement and other long-term goals. And even once you set your mind to it, you’ve still got to come up with the money to invest–all the while paying your rent or your mortgage, whittling down your credit card bills, and putting a little aside for an occasional vacation. However, if you adhere to the proven strategies and professional insights found in The SmartMoney Guide to Long-Term Investing, you can build the kind of wealth you’ll need to pay for all of your long-term goals.

This comprehensive book breaks down the process of saving for your retirement and examines the financial vehicles and strategies that will help you reach your destination. The SmartMoney Guide to Long-Term Investing will first introduce you to the cornerstone of any wealth-building portfolio–stocks, bonds, mutual funds–and give you the tools to estimate how much you need to save for retirement each year, depending on the lifestyle you intend to lead. From there, you’ll learn how to set up an asset allocation strategy that works for you. Drawing on a decade’s worth of financial knowledge and experience, The SmartMoney Guide to Long-Term Investing gives you the names of outstanding mutual funds that will deliver the investment returns you need, shows you how to make the most of your 401(k), and introduces you to numerous real-life retirees, who have key insights into what life after work is really like.

The SmartMoney Guide to Long-Term Investing also explores a long-term goal that usually conflicts with retirement savings–paying for a child’s college education. Focused coverage provides a year-by-year guide to investing wisely for your child’s tuition and shows you how much money you should really be putting aside. You’ll also learn how to let someone else invest for you, by using vehicles such as the 529 college savings plan.

Designed to work as a flexible reference for all investors–no matter what stage of retirement planning you’re in–The SmartMoney Guide to Long-Term Investing will put you on course for the retirement you deserve. With The SmartMoney Guide to Long-Term Investing at your side, you can stop worrying about the future and confidently start building, protecting, and managing your money as you head to and through retirement.

3.0 out of 5 stars Missing areas in a Smart Money Investing Guide, September 5, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The SmartMoney Guide to Long-Term Investing: How to Build Real Wealth for Retirement and Future Goals (Hardcover)
I was looking for an indepth personal financial planning guide with guidance on decision making -- that is not what this book is. It is more a top level look at financial planning in most areas, in depth in a few areas and totally leaving out other areas.

For example, the book describes many of the financial instruments and has a great worksheet to calculate allocations but does not let the reader know why these allocations are the best. The author goes into 529 College Savings Plans but only describes the top 12 states plan. The 70 pages of glossary and index could be better served by covering the topics in more depth or adding sections on real estate or estate planning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading, August 12, 2009
This review is from: The SmartMoney Guide to Long-Term Investing: How to Build Real Wealth for Retirement and Future Goals (Hardcover)
This book is all about investing for retirement, children's college tuition, and other goals. The authors do a pretty good job describing different investment vehicles: stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. I have read many books on investing for retirement and they all give advice to readers on how much money a person needs. This author does not do that,

"How much money will you need in order to retire? Well, that all depends on what kind of retirement you want."

This is so true. Different people live different lifestyles. The same applies one's lifestyle during the retirement. This book also covers different retirement accounts such as 401(k), IRAs, and Roth IRAs. Those readers who do not wish to spend a significant amount of time investing can turn to professional help. Chapter 5 lists 31 top-notch mutual funds that investors can turn to for help. This book provides a pretty good introduction for long-term investing.
