Product Description

Product Description

This Kit includes everything you'll need to get started with Smart Things and will enable you to receive notifications and use your smartphone like a remote to control devices from wherever you are. This Kit contains easy-to-use devices that allow you to use your smartphone like a remote to control devices from wherever you are. Secure your home, control energy use and perform different actions when people or pets are present with the push of a button. Stay up to date by knowing when the kids come home from school or a spouse leaves work, get immediate alerts when unexpected events happen-like when a valuable item moves or there's motion detected outside your home-and turn dumb things like lights, fans and A/C units into smart devices that automatically do what you want them to do. The main component of Smart Things is a Hub that plugs into your Internet router and acts as the building block of your connected home. It can wirelessly communicate with the different sensors included in your Kit and allows you to customize these sensors to perform tasks and notify you when things happen. Because one Hub can connect hundreds of devices, you can enhance your Smart Things experience with additional sensors, light switches, locks and other products for every room in your home.

A Smarter, Connected Home

The SmartThings Know and Control Kit transforms your smartphone into a remote to control and monitor temperature, locks, lights, electronics, and more. Secure your home to protect family and property; get notifications when people come and go; and create a safer, smarter home in the palm of your hand.

The SmartThings Know and Control Kit Includes:
  • 1 SmartThings Hub
  • 2 SmartSense Multi-Purpose Sensors
  • 2 SmartSense Presence Sensors
  • 1 SmartSense Plug-and-Control Outlet

UPDATE 06/13/2014

It's been 6 month since I wrote my review and a lot have changed since then, both in the SmartThings and in the smart home technology in general, particularly with Apple's recent announcement of the HomeKit development framework.

The good news is that the SmartThings team is making steady progress making their system more stable and functional, adding new features and support for new devices. The mobile app for both iPhone and Android has gone through several rounds of updates and now features SmartSetup wizard which makes it easier for the user to configure her devices, setup alerts and actions. It's really impressive to see the system grow from barely functional to quite useful within 6 month. Therefore I'm upgrading my rating to ****.

There're still a lot of improvements that would be very welcome, for example a native iPad app and an ability to create sub-accounts for family members with different privileges.

My original review (posted 01/05/2014) below:

A newcomer to the Home Automation arena, SmartThings was originally crowd-funded by a very successful Kickstarter campaign that raised about 1.2 Mil. Unlike more conventional Home Automation systems, SmartThings pursues "Cloud first" approach. What this means is that all "intelligence" of the SmartThings system resides "in the Cloud", i.e. it runs entirely on the SmartThings servers. The SmartThings hub is just a passive gateway that links SmartThings devices with the cloud. This approach has both advantages and disadvantages.

On the upside, this makes system setup and remote management fairly straightforward. In fact, the only way to manage SmartStings is with their mobile app (both iPhone or Android are supported).

1. Amazon has old zigbee outlet module, smartthings website has newer (better) z-wave appliances module instead.. I recommend that over zigbee one). Make sure you are getting z-wave module.

2. My first unit *(from Amazon warehouse deal) was defective. The hub was slow and took forever to recognize devices. A presence sensor came 0% battery. Two multi sensors came less than 10% battery,. even worse, the activation code was used by the first owner, so I had to call their customer service to activate.. (took 30 minutes.. annoying procedure although the agent I talked with was super nice), Do not buy this from warehouse deal.

3. App is not very effective and hard to customize. For example, I can't do like ..
- if water sensor detects leak -> then siren rings for 1 minute -> then stop the siren and send SMS notification to maintanance office..etc
I was able to do this thing on veralite.

it provides simple (prewritten) apps.. which is nice for most situations.

4. We LOVE presence sensors ( mobile presence should work fine too ) it's pretty accurate. when I arrive home from grocery store two hands full, it will open the lock for me and of course turn the lights on when I arrive. When I leave home, temperature will be set like 65 (or turned off ) and lights will randomly turned on different rooms (so that it looks like someone stays)

5. I DO recommend buying Lowe's IRIS z-wave products for smartthings. It's 100% compatible and much cheaper.
1. IRIS z-wave outlet (actually rebranded GE outlet)
2. IRIS smoke/CO detector
3. Water sensor
4. Siren
5. Light Dimmer

They all work perfectly. Make sure checking they are z-wave. IRIS' zigbee sensors might not work with smartthing hub.

I got this for a few purposes: to do basic presence detection for security purposes (whether a rarely opened door is opened); to control lighting in the house when traveling and at home; and to monitor potential leakage events in the laundry room and water heater.

So far, I've had no bad events to detect, luckily, but the system works fine. For example, when my "rarely opened room" door is opened, I get a push notification on the Android phone task bar that it was opened. Thus, if someone broke in and opened it, I would know. I will just assume that the water detector works as well -- I tested it with small bit of water on a counter top but luckily have had no other incidents. The lights on/off control works well, too. It's pretty fun to sit at work and turn on and off a light that I can't see across town (or across country). Note that I'm reporting on the Android version of the app controls, not IOS.

Despite that, here are some reasons I suggest it mostly for geeks and tinkerers rather than everyone. First, the instructions are minimal. For instance: how do you install the multi detector? Do the pieces have to touch or not? It doesn't say. Answer: they don't, but you have to experiment and figure that out. How is the water detector (purchased separately) to be installed? Answer: on its back so that the two little connectors are down, but it doesn't say that. Why does one of the doors show as "open" even when it's not? Answer: sometimes one of the pieces needs to be installed upside-down from how it arrives in the box. You should expect a lot of tinkering and Googling to figure these things out.

Second, the instructions are pretty much non-existent for the smartphone app.
