Not 5 stars because this thing CURRENTLY requires the cloud for app function. So far so good on my internet not being down when I need it to run my z wave devices.

Kits start at 200 dollars and come with a hub, door sensor, presence dongle and motion controller. I'd say just get the hub for a hundred and load up on some GE Jasco switches(buy the iris ones from lowes since they're cheaper). Your phone already acts like a presence device so no need for the dongle. As far as the door and motion sensors are concerned, the last thing I need in my home is another device that requires me to change it's batteries.

I'm fairly new to the "smart home" world and researched a LOT of products before purchasing the SmartThings hub. I actually started out with 2 Belkin Wemo outlets before I got SmartThings but I returned the Belkin outlets because I had issues getting them both to work properly when I was away from home. Some of the smart home "hubs" I looked into were:

Staples Connect
Lowes IRIS
Micasa Verde VERA
and a handful of others

I chose the SmartThings hub for a few reasons:
-It was an extremely popular kickstarter project with a lot of support
-It supports numerous devices
-The app has a lot of capabilities and limitless potential
-It seemed easy to setup
-The user forums have a lot of activity and growing daily

Before the hub arrived, I got anxious and installed the app and opened it...it got to the screen where it wanted to connect a hub and I closed it. When the hub arrived, I opened the app back up and that screen wasn't there and it took me a bit to figure out where to add a hub...I think the app should have auto-detected a hub wasn't connected and should have automatically taken me to that screen. So my advice for now is wait on the hub is in your hands before installing the app!

Once I found it again, I had it connected to the network along with 3 zwave devices within about 10 minutes. It was easy connecting each device and they responded quickly and perfectly whether I was on the same wifi network or off of it.

The part that got me a bit hung up was when I went to setup modes and phrases...and smartapps...it was a bit confusing to figure out where to make each setting to do exactly what I was needing.

The SmartThings Hub has exceeded my expectations. Setup took exactly 1 minute, plug in the power and ethernet cord to your network... you are done. The smartphone app will be your main interface with the system, it is designed very well. The app looks, feels, and performs like you would expect from an Apple designed product. From the app you can connect devices to your hub, my first was an outdoor power switch. Since this first installation, I have added smart locks to my doors, smart light switches, smart wall outlets, and several motion detectors to facilitate automation around the home.

I chose the SmartThings Hub over the revolv and Staples Connect. The first reason I did this was because I wanted to expand the control options for my home using the free service from If Then Then That (aka IFTTT.com). Revolv is attempting to replicate the experience within their own ecosystem, but my personal preference is to use the more robust IFTTT website. IFTTT allows for advanced automation and helps to bridge the gap between devices that are not directly supported by SmartThings. For example, although SmartThings allows for my lights to turn on at a specific time, IFTTT can track the seasonal differences of the sun and have my lights turn on at a specific time before sunset.

The second reason I chose SmartThings hub was because of the lack of a true standard for connected devices. Yes Zwave, ZigBee, etc exist, but no industry standard has been agreed upon. If a new wireless standard comes to market, whatever hub I choose will need to be replaced. At $99, the SmartThings does almost everything I need today and is inexpensive enough to replace without hesitation when the need arises in the future.

I purchased two of these units during their Kickstarter campaign. I have really liked the product since I got it with a few multi sensors and motion sensors and outlet modules. It was pretty easy to setup and when I ran into a problem the "chat with support" button on the app was instantly connected and I was walked through the process and had any trouble shooting done by the remote Smartthings employee when he logged into my hub.

The system has gone through multiple upgrades in the hub software and the app and it is now just amazing. They have added many more "things" I can link to such as moisture sensors and garage door relays so my options have increased. The process of connecting with these devices is now much faster and almost always flawless on the first try. As always, the customer support is great and any problem I have is solved within minutes on the support chat line. I have never had such good customer support!!

I have a bunch of lights in my house wired to it, outlets, in wall switches/dimmers, motion sensors, a deadbolt lock, a garage door relay switch, presence sensors and have connected my iPhone and my wife's as presence sensors.

Now as I approach my house after work, the garage door opens, my lights go on and my front door unlocks. I have it set to alert me on my phone in case it does any of this by mistake, but that never happens. I did forget to close my garage door a few times as I left the house and my smart things system alerted me the door was left open (I have it set for an alert if open more than 5 minutes) and I was able to close it remotely from my iPhone.

I also setup motion sensors to trigger connected outlets that I had LED strips connected to acting like a nightlight as you walk around the house.
