How long the filters last depends greatly on your individual water supply. I've sinced pulled the battery out of the faucet because it is just a timer and has nothing to do with actually meaning the filters are dirty. I'm averaging about 9 month on the Pre and Post Filters instead of recommended 3 month. When I change them the prefilter is usually reddish (rusty...

1.0 out of 5 stars Very bad filter
I have to replace this FX12P filter only after 4 months of use (I bought a new GXRM10G filter set from Home Depot). Suddenly one day the GXRM10G stopped working - no water out of the faucet.

I disassembled it. The post-filter looked OK (still white), but the pre-filter one became black. Worse, the pre-filter then stopped to filter the water well, so as...

How long the filters last depends greatly on your individual water supply. I've sinced pulled the battery out of the faucet because it is just a timer and has nothing to do with actually meaning the filters are dirty. I'm averaging about 9 month on the Pre and Post Filters instead of recommended 3 month. When I change them the prefilter is usually reddish (rusty looking) and the post filter just grayish. I've had the Osmosis filter in place now for about 4 years. I test the water with a TSD meter (Total Disolved Solids) and testing water out of the regular faucet it reads around a 10, Testing water out of the Osmosis filter it tests a zero. Which to me mean the osmosis filter is still working 100%. If anyone knows something different let me know. The only concern I have is where the overflow water drains into my sink drain I need to clean that every 3 months. If not it can get very dirty and clog up the osmosis drain. What happens then is the water can come out of the vent hole on the side of the Osmosis Filter. It happened twice in the four years I've had it and have been home both times. But potentially if the water doesn't flow back into your sink it could flood the floor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Part of the system, August 22, 2010

These are the two filters which, along with the reverse-osmosis membrane (the real heart of the system) make up the GE reverse-osmosis system. The filters come with detailed written instructions, which is not always the case nowadays, but is always appreciated. Installation will take time and care, and you must have the special wrench and a strong grip to finish the job. I repeat: you must be careful.
I had no trouble, but I have a bit of mechanical ability. I know some people who, frankly, have trouble with changing a light bulb. This replacement might be discouraging if you are in that category. But if you are, take heart! Don't give up on yourself. You can always learn, and practice at simple mechanical things is a valuable learning activity, as good for the brain as an "intellectual" activity -- and so say I.

Very fast shipping. Great product. However not sure if buying on-line is the cheapest. Do your research and shop around.

Product was priced very favorably; almost two for the price of one when compared to my local home big box store. Would buy again if price remains that competitive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pops right in., January 6, 2012

These filters are bone white...the ones that was in the filter was far from bone white, one was mucky brown and smelled "fishy" the other was somewhat less but also was dark a bit smelly. I used a bottle brush to wash out the inside with hot soapy water to make sure that the whole cavity is nice and clean before the installation of the replacement. The whole effort took about 20 minutes.

I also used an old bath towel on a cooking sheet under the filters when I was doing the work and prevented any water from coming out and wetting the floor of the cabinet under my sink. Do that if you have the room.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very bad filter, April 7, 2008
This review is from: GE SmartWater Replacement Reverse Osmosis Filters (FX12P)
I have to replace this FX12P filter only after 4 months of use (I bought a new GXRM10G filter set from Home Depot). Suddenly one day the GXRM10G stopped working - no water out of the faucet.

I disassembled it. The post-filter looked OK (still white), but the pre-filter one became black. Worse, the pre-filter then stopped to filter the water well, so as result it damaged the RO membrane, making me to replace all of them.
My water quality is fine - for years we have drunk from the faucet. We use the filter just after having children

That contradicts to what they claim that the pre-filter can last 6 months and the RO membrance can last 3 years.

After relacing first time, 2 days ago, after a month, the filter stopped giving water again. I opened the pre-filter and see that it became black again. I had to buy to replace it again.

Don't buy this. If this hapens again next month, I will trash the whole GXRM10G.
