5.0 out of 5 stars Solid, sturdy scratching post that my cats love!, March 22, 2007
This review is from: Ultimate Scratching Post (Misc.)
I wasn't sure if I should spend so much money on a scratching post that I wasn't even sure my cats would use, but I'm glad I did! It's very solid and sturdy-- even my biggest cats (~15 pounds) can dig their claws in to their hearts' content. It's nice and tall so they can get a good stretch, and even doubles as a "platform" for them to sit on.

I was also concerned about the post tipping over, but haven't had a problem with it yet. If your cats are bigger than mine, it might not hurt if you want to attach a piece of plywood to the bottom to make the base bigger, but with the workout our cats give this post, we haven't found it necessary.

The assembly was a bit of a challenge, but I figured out if you just attach the two vertical pieces together first the post goes together quite easily. It should only take five minutes or so to put together, if it takes that long! You will need a screwdriver.

It also helps to rub catnip on the post to get the cats' attention, but I think they would have discovered it anyway because our cats love the scratchy feel of the sisal wrappings. I've found that with some of our cats, all it takes is *me* scratching on the post with my nails to get their attention to the post and away from the furniture. I only wish I'd bought this sooner, before our cats shredded our chairs!

I was given this scratcher for my 4 cats. They are all over 15lbs and they use this many times a day. It is very sturdy and has never tipped, even with their weight. I would definitely recommend this scratcher for any cat lover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I had invested in this earlier!, February 27, 2008

Since I purchased this scratching post...my cat has totally given up scratching in all of her favorite places..namely all of my furniture and she has also given up shredding the carpet in the doorways. I would have saved the expense of getting a new carpet, thanks to her, if I had invested earlier. It is well worth every penny and I am sure she would agree as she hits it up every time she walks past it as it gives her a good stretch and keeps her nails just how she likes em. There's something about the sisal that she loves..other than the catnip.
