For lugging around the house or beyond, Smart Kit attaches a sturdy carrying handle to the basket's exterior. A Velcro fastener holds the basket lid closed. Resting on the rim inside the basket, a removable plastic tray provides expansive storage for miscellaneous spools, measuring tape, thimbles and more. Patterns, fabric scraps, and garments-in-progress can be stowed below the tray. The basket includes 12 different colors of thread for flexibility and a needle threader. Small boxes separately contain snap fasteners, pearl pins, stickpins, safety pins, hand sewing needles, and small white buttons. A pair of 5-inch scissors snip away unwanted strings. Additional tools consist of a 60-inch measuring tape, mini pin cushion, metal thimble, seam ripper, tracing wheel, and tailor's chalk. The kit measures 11 by 8 by 5 inches and weighs 2 pounds upon shipping. --Jessica Reuling

It is not a five star product anymore,
This review is from: Smartek RX-12 Sewing Basket With Accessories (Kitchen)
I received the sewing kit to give to my future daughter-in-law. I was appalled at the quality of the product. The plastic tray is extremely "flimsy" and would not last at all. The "notions" that are included are of particulary poor quality. The tracing wheel would not last long enough to trace one pattern. The scissors are not sewing scissors, but are cheap craft scissors. The thread is not mercerized and would shrink when washed. As one person who saw it said "No corner was left uncut." I would not recommend that anyone buy this, especially if you were using it as a prize or a promotional device. Currently, I am disturbed by their return policy, which seems to be "customer unfriendly."

I purchased the sewing kit to go with my new sewing machine that I received for Christmas. The velcro for the closure was unattached as well as the closure being held on by one strand of thread. The workmanship on this item is "shoddy" at best. The removable tray was bent out of shape and I don't foresee it being worth much. If you return the item, it appears that you lose your original shipping cost as well as paying to return the item. I do not recommend that anyone waste their money on this item; no matter how good the picture looks.

I'm writing this review only to offer a realistic review of this product. I paid approximately 20 dollars for this basket. You can get a similar basket at Walmart for about the same amount with a better plastic dish inside but empty, so the fact that it comes with a bunch of starter accessories that I didn't have to quick run out and buy was an added bonus for me. The key word is starter accessories. Don't buy this product for your seamstress wife or daughter, get an empty sewing basket at Jo-ann Fabrics and spend a little more money for it. This is a starter sewing basket. The intended purpose is to get you started.I can't imagine anyone that is serious about sewing and has been for years buying this basket. Here's why: 1. This basket is small. It's fine for me but my mom, who does quilting, uses a three foot tackle box for her accessories. In other words, someone that has been sewing for awhile will have a lot more accessories and this basket will not meet their needs. 2. Someone that has been sewing for more than a six months to a year will already have everything that this basket includes. With that being said don't buy this product unless you are shopping as or for a beginner. 3. Put things into perspective. This is coming off of my receipt from Jo-ann Fabrics and another purchase from Amazon.com. A spool of thread: 2.59, a set of three titanium coated scissors: 13.99, 500 pins: 3.49, a tomato pin cushion: 1.99. My point is for 20 dollars, including the basket, you are not getting top of the line accessories. I would never use the thread that came with the basket in my sewing machine. I probably would use it to mend something or to hand sew something small like a button. I gave it a four star review because I think the velcro tab used to close the box isn't glued well and it won't last and I didn't like that there is a piece of material sticking out on the back by the cover's hinge that needs to be cut.
