5.0 out of 5 stars Cute Chest
Very Cute! A little smaller than expected but wasn't disappointed at all. Also, I was surprised to find out that the chest had an actual finish on it. It wasn't unfinished wood. Nice surprise!

It includes all necessary sewing essentials from thread to thimble.

Definite gift idea for a college student or someone starting out in a small apartment...

3.0 out of 5 stars not quite what I was expecting
The chest is very compact and holds quite a bit more stuff than I would have expected, but doesn't quite do what I had hoped. It is very inexpensive, so I wasn't really thinking it would be amazing, however I thought somehow, that the spools of thread would be larger, or that the spacing between them would be greater. I didn't believe I would be getting 100yrd spools of DMC thread or anything, but I had hoped that I could easily reuse the rods with the smaller DMC spools, but I think it'll only hold Gutt. thread spools. Also the poles are pretty short, so it's unlikely I'll be able to store bobbins beneith the spools like I like to.
I do recomend this for anyone who doesn't have a lot of the individual tools, ect, as it's a cheap way to get most of them. You'd still need to buy yourself a nice pair of sheers for cutting fabric, and some ballpoint needles (the needles they include are rather cheap), but other than that you probly wont need to buy anything else for a while.

2.0 out of 5 stars Depends what you want it for..., November 17, 2008
This review is from: Smartek RX-24W Wooden Sewing Chest With Accessories (Kitchen)
If you're just a Jane Average sewer that occasionally replaces lost buttons or mends ripped seams, this would be a perfectly fine sewing chest.

My darling husband, bless him, got this for me as a gift, being ever so thoughtful yet clueless about sewing or my related habits. I do quite a lot of sewing, including designing/making clothing, quilting and dollmaking, and I find this thing pretty much useless. The chest itself is OK quality, however, it isn't large enough to hold much in the way of notions and other necessary doodads. The doodads that came with it are all pretty chintzy to me and I doubt I'll ever use them. The rods on the top are short and arranged close enough together that, should you want to store standard thread spools on there, they would not fit, and most serious sewers I know need space for way more colors than could fit on top of there. Only the little bitty spools of cheapy thread that come with the chest can fit.

To me this thing seems lacking in functionality, and is as such an obsolete waste of money which I nevertheless will proudly display in my sewing workspace to placate my husband. As a non-sewer's sewing kit, it would be fine I suppose.

5.0 out of 5 stars What I needed, June 11, 2008

The box is small enough to fit nicely wherever, but big enough to hold all of the essentials (that are included). Other buyers have complained about the quality of needles, etc. but for simple tasks such as sewing on buttons and fixing ripped seams they are perfectly fine.

3.0 out of 5 stars disappointing at best..., February 5, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I wasn't expecting the sun, moon, and stars for $20, but I *was* expecting a quality at least on par with the little sewing kits one can find for five dollars in a grocery store.

The box is beautiful, and will be handy for storage. The tools that come with the box, however, are all but worthless. I don't think I've ever had a needle bend in my grasp from just a few minutes of sewing two layers of cotton fabric before. Nor have I ever had one dull within five minutes of use -- I was sewing a pressing cushion twelve inches long by six inches wide on either end, and had to change needles after completing only one end and about three inches of one side in simple backstitch.

The pinchushion, of course, has not an ounce of emery in it, which is not entirely unexpected, but to add insult to injury, when I switched needles, the threader broke, on only its second use. The only redeeming item in this kit, then, is quite likely the box itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smartek RX-24W Wooden Sewing Chest With Accessories, December 22, 2008
This review is from: Smartek RX-24W Wooden Sewing Chest With Accessories (Kitchen)
I recently retired and took up sewing again after 25 years. I didn't even have a sewing machine anymore, so I purchased a new machine. I received this sewing chest for a gift. I keep it next to my machine and use it all of the time. It is so handy and is such a nice compact size. It contains all of the accessories you need for sewing projects. My nine-year old granddaughter has shown an interest in sewing when she comes over, so I bought her a sewing machine and this chest for a Christmas present. I know this chest has everything in it she will need to get started on a great hobby.

2.0 out of 5 stars Let down, January 9, 2012

This review is from: Smartek RX-24W Wooden Sewing Chest With Accessories (Kitchen)
I thought this looked so cute and perfect for my niece for Christmas, but boy was I disappointed! I ended up purchasing something else for my niece as I was too ashamed to give her this. Many of the thingies on top to hold the thread were crooked, but they seemed to be easy to square up with a bit of manipulation. The drawers don't square up very cleanly, but they did hold their contents properly. Overall, this is one of those "you get what you pay for" kind of deals I suppose. Being I don't sew at all, I can't say much more than that. I am keeping the item simply because it's the only sewing stuff under the roof and maybe one day I can use it. The thread would make for festive dental floss and the wooden portion would make great kindling for a bonfire or something, but I wouldn't roast a marshmallow over it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Junk. Chest fell apart, December 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Smartek RX-24W Wooden Sewing Chest With Accessories (Kitchen)
A disappointment considering I bought the sewing kit because it came in the wooden chest. When I opened the box the chest came in, the chest fell apart. Now the accessories will go in a tin and the wood in the trash.

1.0 out of 5 stars I'm very upset., December 15, 2011
This review is from: Smartek RX-24W Wooden Sewing Chest With Accessories (Kitchen)
I'm very upset with this product. I bought it as a gift and it came in and I opened it immediately to decorate and wrap it for a very close friend. I opened the beat up box to find the chest in pieces! It's doable but definitely not what I paid for. The pieces aren't even whole. One corner is obviously broken off and even if I fix it there will be a noticeable crack. I don't know if I'll be using Amazon again....
