The good news is Costco's liberal return policy, nearly open-ended.

I got the unit home, followed start up instructions, filled oil, gas, etc and couldn't get it to start.

A short note to everyone considering this generator. It does have the Yamaha engine and it is quiet. I will tell you the two things that make it different from the Yamaha 2000is that retails for about $1000.00 (I got the Smarter Tools generator for $599 plus tax).

1. This unit is not designed to be placed in parallel with another generator of the same type. Yamaha units have this feature built-in. You just need the wire.

2. This unit does not have a fuel gage. Yamaha units have a fuel gage.

3. Yamaha is blue, Smarter Tools is red.

I have one of these and love it. Just be aware. This will not run a travel trailer AC unit which usually has 2500 watts of starting power, minimum. Other than that, this is a great little unit at a fantastic price.

So now you can ask yourself. Are a fuel gauge, parallel capability and blue color worth an extra $350? For me, the added features were not worth the extra money.

Have fun making electricity.

This generator works perfectly with a variety of UPS backups. I tested it with both my cheaper TrippLite Omni900 UPS, and with my more expensive APC SmartUPS 1500RM UPS, and contrary to what one person ("mvrm") had written about ECO mode on his APC 1000 & 1500 UPS, neither of mine had any problems. My guess is that he had not seen the "sensitivity" switch on the back of some APC models, and inadvertently set it to "high sensitivity"... or he was trying to run a heavy load in ECO mode!

I wanted to be absolutely sure that I could use ECO mode to extend the run time on my UPS during the hurricane season, so I ran several tests with loads ranging from 150W to 300W and the generator just purred quietly in ECO mode, with no issues on either UPS, and no issues on my TV, internet or computer equipment. Just as a point of reference, my TrippLite UPS has stepped sinewave with sluggish AVR response & no sensitivity switch, while my APC has smooth sinewave output with instant AVR response, set the defaults for "medium" sensitivity & 130V cut-off, and both worked fine.

I also did additional tests, using a meter to watch the voltage while switching from ECO to regular mode & back, and still, it maintained a steady output around 125V despite the changes in speed.

I also shut the generator off, then started it back up a couple minutes later, and I had no trouble starting it on the 2nd pull (1/4 choke), and I also confirmed that it is able to start with a small load (300W) already connected, so when the manual states to unplug the load before starting, they appear to be referring to heavier loads.

In the end, I confirmed this generator will work very nicely in ECO mode, and should be able to power my equipment (300W) for 9 hours straight on a mere 1 gallon of gas...

I'm a very fussy a-retentive engineer and find most products I buy need "modifications" (except my 2012 Accord Coupe, but that's another review) since I usually find something unsatisfactory. Not this product. I bought my AP2000i at Costco for $599. Not cheap for 1600 rated Watts, but the Yamaha engine, extremely low noise, and other features like smart throttle sold me. I wasn't disappointed, and in fact pleasantly surprised the unit came with oil, an oil funnel, tool kit, and 12 Volt battery charging cables. Opening up the unit to add oil and seeing it's guts reminded me of other Yamaha products I own - very well thought out. It fires up on 1 or 2 pulls, is quieter than I could imagine, and vibrates very little. I plugged in a 1875 Watt hair dryer on HI to test the output - no problem, no overload indicator. The carb even comes with a float bowl drain and drain tube - nice details, and there's no need to remove the spark plug to fog the cylinder for storage - the crankcase breather elbow on the carb pulls off to spray in fogging oil. The 3-year warranty says a lot too. I'm very impressed!

Though it has a Yamaha engine, this generator is made in China. The first unit I bought from Costco, the on/off switch was not working. The unit would start, but I could not turn it off. I emptied the gas and oil and returned it to the store without any issues. The second unit works as advertised. Easy to start and very quiet - much quieter than the Champion 3500/4000 that I also have. With this unit running in smart throttle mode, you can stand right next to it and have a conversation. I also plugged in a shop vac and a band saw - turned both on while it was in smart throttle mode and it did not trip the breaker. The unit throttled up to meet the demand. Great value.

I relied on the generally positive reviews on this unit when I purchased it, also for $599. I got the unit home, followed start up instructions, filled oil, gas, etc and couldn't get it to start. Support was helpful, walked me through trouble shooting, saw I had spark, thought it was "sticking" low oil unit, had me take it apart and disconnect switch to no resolution. They even had pictures and a guide for this so it couldn't have been the first time with this issue. They offered to set up a service call, but I needed a unit that weekend so I ended up paying the extra $350 for a Honda EU2000i that started first pull and ended up returning the Smarter Tool 2000i. If it would have worked, I'd have probably been happy. Glad I didn't wait until I needed it.
