Read the description carefully. It states the speaker range is 50' not the microphone. My dog stood 10' away from it and even with the sensitivity on high and her barking right at the thing it wouldn't trigger. Matter of fact I never could get it to trigger with barking. The only time it did go off was when I put the batteries in for the first time and my husband was mowing the lawn on his big riding mower and he knocked into a chicken wire fence which made me run out to get it with the unit in my hand. Even then it didn't go off till I was about 4 feet from the mower.

I also couldn't get it to just make the ultrasonic sound. Even when switched from audible to ultrasonic you still hear a noise. Not just me but my husband too so it's not a case of super human hearing on my part :-)

Yes the timer option is very nice. This was actually why I purchased this one over the others as we only wanted to stop the night barking. But what good is the timer function if the microphone can't pick up the barking?

So read these descriptions carefully when looking at these control units. Unless your dog always barks in the same spot and you can place this unit under 4 feet from them then pick something else.

The item didn't work at all. As a matter of fact. My dog didn't even flinch when I tested it right next to her head. No, she's not deaf either. We yell for her to stop barking from across the house and she hears that fine.

The item actually melted in the sun (it still worked though). I was going to return it but it said it had to be in good condition and it was all warped from the sun - oh well - lesson learned.

I'm not trying to sound bitter but don't waste your money on this item. I'm gonna try the shock collar next. Maybe I'll have better luck.

I bought two of these. One works just fine but the other failed. To my surprise the unit has no warranty. If the manufacturer has no faith in their product, why should I? The seller refunded my money but that was because it failed within the 30 day return period.

We've had this product for about two years, and have had good results. I'd give it 5-stars if it hadn't just died. I'm buying another.

We bought it to keep our two dogs from standing at the front gate and barking at passers by. The unit is about 10 feet from the gate, and in this location, it triggered reliably when the dogs barked (it also triggers when jets fly overhead and in thunderstorms).

From reading reviews elsewhere, I understand that the effectiveness seems to depend on the dog's personality. That's consistent with my experience, because our dogs responded differently. Neither dog responded to the ultrasonic mode, so we kept it on audible mode. Our Border Collie mix male doesn't like loud noises (afraid of the lawn mower, goes to his hole when the kids are playing loudly in the back yard). When the unit goes off, he walks away, tail between his legs. Our Lab mix female is the primary barker, and typical lab - oblivious to everything unless its food or affection. She's not as bothered when the unit sounds, but her barking is interrupted much as if someone had leaned out the window, clapped and yelled "That's enough barking." While it doesn't keep her completely quiet, she'll also not stand at the fence and bark. For example, a passer by might get one or two barks when in sight, rather than continual barking while in sight and barking for a few minutes after.

As to reliability, ours worked out of the box (although there's no way to tell if the ultrasonic worked). On longevity, ours was installed under a large eve mostly, but not completely, sheltered from the weather (under a large eve). After about two years it died. I took it apart hoping to find a clear problem. The unit is sealed and looks like it would withstand some moisture. However, on mine, the microphone and surrounding metal bits were rusted - suggesting the seal around the microphone leaked.

It was great the first time we got it. However, in about 3 weeks, it didn't work as well. We have 2 dogs (7 yr old pit mix & 11 yr old Shepherd mix). It's great for our pit mix but now the device does not really bother the Shepherd mix -- maybe her hearing is not as sensitive any more and she is just stubbord. It seems that when the device is set on "ultrasonic" the dogs kept on barking, but when it was set on "audible" it made a difference. The sound gets annoying and for sure the neighbors could hear it. We'll continue using the device, but I already ordered a collar for the Shepherd mix to use at certain hours. Hopefully this will work.

Product does not work. I have the hand held Petsafe Ultrasonic Pet Trainer which works very well at stopping dogs from barking. I bought the Bark Smart Deluxe to automatically stop the barking but it has absolutely no effect. Even when I press the test button to force it to transmit, it has no effect whatsoever. I had to go get my Petsafe product to get them to stop barking. The Bark Smart Deluxe is now in the trash can.

I had one dog that barked a lot and I didn't want to take other more invasive actions like shock collars, etc. So I tried the Ultrasonic dog bark deterrent. This only worked for about 3 days. It worked by startling my dogs. I could see that it startled them when they started barking. But once they were used to it, it didn't deter them anymore. I still have the unit but won't try to sell it because I don't think it's worth anything and since I would not recommend it, I won't sell it to anyone either.

I got this thing plugged it in and it didn't do anything don't waste your time I returned mine and now waiting on different one to come in.

I have tried 3 different "bark deterrent" products, none stop the barking all the time, but this one does most of the time and was the best price. If you want to get some sleep, this will stop most dogs barking at least some of the time, which is much better than daily barking. easy to use - just put in batteries....be careful if you live in a really wet climate, put in under an eave or someplace where it's protected. highly recommend
