    Product Description

Emmy Award winner Debra Messing (Will & Grace), Academy Award winner Anjelica Huston (Prizzi’s Honor), Megan Hilty (Broadway’s Wicked) and American Idol’s Katharine McPhee star in the groundbreaking, critically acclaimed series Smash.  Talented newcomer Karen Cartwright (McPhee) is up for the role of a lifetime in a new Broadway musical based on the iconic Marilyn Monroe.  The only thing standing in her way is Ivy Lynn (Hilty), a seasoned theater veteran who is determined to land the part herself and will stop at nothing to realize her own dreams of fame.   Also starring Tony Award winner Christian Borle (Broadway’s Peter and the Starcatcher) and Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean).   Watch all 15 “gloriously entertaining” (Robert Bianco, USA Today) episodes back to back and uninterrupted in this 4 disc set, filled with fantastic musical performances, stunning production numbers and scandalous backstage dramas, with never-before-seen bonus features including Deleted Scenes, Featurettes and more!

The "show within a show" concept gets a full-throttle workout in Smash, released here with all 15 first-season episodes on four discs. The many trials and tribulations involved in mounting a Broadway production, in this case a musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe, are depicted in creator Theresa Rebeck's TV series. But there's an operatic element here, too--soap operatic, that is, as the behind-the-scenes tumult is designed to be a good deal juicier than what happens onstage. Not that the legendary Monroe ("There was something about her," says one character. "How much she wanted to love and be loved… reminds me of a saint") isn't a good subject. But the particulars of her story will be familiar to most viewers. Less recognizable will be the process--from conception to creation to casting, from securing financing to rehearsals to workshops to previews--that preoccupies Smash's characters from start to finish. Vying for the lead role are Karen Cartwright (American Idol's Katharine McPhee), an ingénue from Iowa (Smash is definitely not cliché-free), and Broadway veteran Ivy Lynn (Megan Hilty); one would think that the rivalry's over once Ivy sleeps with arrogant Brit director Derek Wills (Jack Davenport) and gets the gig, but one would be mistaken. Meanwhile, songwriter Julia Houston (Debra Messing) struggles with both her marriage and her love life, which are by no means the same; her writing partner, Tom Levitt (Christian Borle), in addition to his own relationship issues, has a sneaky, duplicitous assistant (Jaime Cepero) who may be the real villain of the piece; and producer Eileen Rand (Anjelica Huston) is in the midst of a bitter divorce. Many will find all of this entertainingly addictive. The songs (written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman), while hardly classics, are good, as are the big production numbers. And while some of the subplots are silly (when her voice falters, Ivy must decide between taking steroids or being replaced by Karen) and some seem superfluous (like Julia and her husband's attempt to adopt a Chinese baby), others ring true (Ivy's mother, a Broadway legend played by Bernadette Peters, could hardly be less supportive), and overall, the depiction of show biz as a maddening mess of passions, betrayals, back-biting, infighting, and (often illicit) sex is engaging and fun. In addition to Peters, guest stars include Nick Jonas and Uma Thurman, while among the bonus features are extended musical numbers, deleted scenes, and making-of featurettes. --Sam Graham

If you're here, you probably know that Smash is one of the best shows to appear on television in the last 20 years. Thank you, Theresa Rebeck, for creating it!

Great music, great characters (Derek is my favorite), everybody who loves New York and especially Broadway will have a BLAST watching every single episode. What could you expect, it also has Steven Spielberg as one of its executive producers!

I'm sure that thousands and thousands of americans and foreigners who love NYC will feel the same way. Am I right?

My god... and the original music of this show !?

I don't have words to describe how incredible and perfect they are, really, REALLY creative, songs AND lyrics, you have to watch Smash and listen to them yourself, if you still didn't do that!
(Don't waste any time, btw, you're gonna fall in love with the original music!)

The original songs were written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, these guys deserve no less than a standing ovation! (They are also executive producers). Where do I sign up to work with them?

My favorite ones are: "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" (episode 3), "On Lexington & 52nd Street" (episode 7), "A Thousand and One Nights" (an AWESOME indian song on episode 12) and "Second Hand White Baby Grand" (also episode 12). Some of them you can have here The Music Of Smash [+digital booklet]

I, myself, a brazilian born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, have Times Square/Broadway as my favorite place in the city, so you can imagine what it was for me the release of this show.

But seriously, on this day and age, no announcement of a Blu-ray release with perfect image/sound and tons of extras? Come on!

5.0 out of 5 stars Are You Fascinated by Musicals/Theater? March 19, 2012
If you love the world of musical theater, you may enjoy this smashing romp aptly titled SMASH. With a stellar cast including Deborah Messing, Katherine McPhee and Anjelica Huston with Spielberg producing it, there's talent invested in it.

The talent is trying to produce a Broadway Musical based on the iconic Marilyn Monroe. However, there are the usual challenges: inconvenient romances, slimy director, cast rivalry, insufficient financial backing, script rewriting etc. It is great fun to observe the creative process and the chaos surrounding it. Will they produce a smash hit? You want to keep watching to see if it will come together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally Glee with a Script and Great Acting March 19, 2012
Best show I have seen in years. I did not expect to like it and by about 15 minutes into the first episode I was hooked. The songs are incredible, the storyline very engaging and a tremendous cast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just as amazing the second and third time viewed February 5, 2013
    Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I have watched this amazing series 2 or 3 times through and I am amazed at the amount of superb work and artistry that is put into a once a week tv show. It has to be a daunting task and I have been a fan of many of the stars for many years. I am truly amazed at Katharine's growth from the first days of American Idol until now (and yes I voted for her week after week). Megan, Debra, Angelica and everyone in the cast are superb. This video gets my highest rating as does the show! Long live Smash!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars THIS is not Glee!! January 23, 2012
    thereadersheartstring . blogspot . com

I am sure many people are going to be comparing this show to Glee before they have even seen the premiere episode and though, yes, the show does have to do with singing, it really is not like Glee at all. Smash has an incredible cast of actors, including Anjelica Houston and Debra Messing and has to do with Debra's character wanting to create a musical based on the legendary Marilyn Monroe and this show is considerably more mature and 'darker' then Glee. The characters only sing during performances or asides that start in their house, but end up on stage as they a perform a song. I like this show and was glad to find it on Hulu and on here, Amazon, for a free download.

Smash is a fun show, with powerful voices that will no doubt have as much drama/edge as it will humor/camp. If you like Glee, you will def like this show. If you like musicals, you will def like this show. If you just like good shows, you will def like this show!

Katherine McPhee is amazing and will quite possibly recieve an Emmy or Golden Globe nomination for her performance, as will newcomer and her onscreen rival, Megan Hilty as the two compete to be Marilyn!

This is a fun, dramatic and emotional show that I will continue to follow and if you want a good time, you should too!!

I don't know about the US, but season 1 is available on blu-ray in France (you can buy on french Amazon). They say there are forced french subtitles on the songs, though, even if you choose english audio.
