5.0 out of 5 stars I got an invitation once, to liberty... July 2, 2010
Erik Peterson began performing as Mischief Brew in 2000, serenading the lucky denizens of Philadelphia with his unique style of rowdy, anarchic folk-punk, and instigating drunken sing-alongs in bars and basements across the city. Musically, you'll find influences of everything from 1970s peace-punk to gypsy swing to old-tyme. His lyrics deal with many themes such as poverty, corporatism, and historic radical movements, always infused with a spirit of hope and adventure. With his wife he formed his own record label, Fistolo Records, staying true to the do-it-yourself (DIY) ethics of independent music. For many years it was just Erik and his guitar, and it was not uncommon to find him playing in the backyard at a random house party or late at night in a public park. Mischief Brew and Fistolo Records became mainstays in the Philadelphia independent music scene, and the folk-punk scene at large. Then, around 2005, he began to play and record with a full band, evolving his style and releasing this first full-length album, "Smash the Windows."

"Smash the Windows" is a stellar album, taking the foundation of Erik's amazing song-writing skills and adding a frenetic energy, higher production values and great guest-musicians. It marks a departure from the typical acoustic folk-punk style that many were used to, delving into a realm that is more difficult to categorize. These songs are catchy as hell, with styles that range from whirling gypsy mayhem to reflective ballads. Erik is an amazing musician and a captivating story-teller, exploring the political as well as the personal. Get this album! Support DIY!
