UX Design: Foundations for Designing Online User Experiences is a good introductory book for anyone new to User Experience design and also new to projects or working with clients. More than one-half of the book is about the process of user design. For example, one chapter walks through reserving a conference room, having the proper equipment, planning an agenda---the type of tasks that a management trainee or junior project manager should already know.

UX Design: Foundations would be a helpful book for someone in a new or junior role that is unfamiliar with user experience design and wants to learn to help them as a team member in a small project. It will also be a helpful book for experienced project managers who have a user experience work stream as part of their project, and just want a general sense of the field.

As UX Design: Foundations focuses primarily on commerce sites, it is not as helpful for intranet, applications, or even complex sites. There are some elements that are important across all types of sites, such as information architecture, home page hints, etc., but again, all of these are at a high level.

UX Design: Foundations for Designing Online User Experiences is a fast, easy read, and it's true to it's title in that it provides foundational information for readers to get a very high level perspective of user experience design and the process of working with clients and site users.

Should be titled "Project Management of UX Designs for Very Large Websites", instead of "UX Design". 2/3 of the book consists of excellent details on web UX project management; 1/3 is webpages' UX recommendations, mostly on retail websites. For example, book writes more about workshop procedures to gather UX specifications than about webpages' UX specifications.

Authors are premiere UX consultants in Great Britain, hired by sizable companies, frequently retailers. They write from such perspective, dealing with websites with budgets covering several specialists including visual designer, developer, marketer, product managers, campaign managers, etc. Excellent tips on how to involve committees and consensus-building during web UX design. Not for smaller websites.

The book has weaknesses. 1. User design, I believe, should be tied into search engine and web marketing, and this approach doesn't. 2. The book is interested in profitability and returns on investments, but I feel it should have stronger emphasis. 3. Tie into social media in design is absent.

Incorrect title and profitability weaknesses--4 star.

Who would particularly benefit from this book?

1. Buyers of UX services would learn what UX people do.
2. A trainee for UX would learn a lot!
3. A web designer without a UX department who suddenly lands a large project.

I am not exactly new to the concept of UX design, I just never realized that what I was doing was called "UX Design." I've been in web design and development for over 15 years but have never had a formal introduction to what is now the growing field of UX Design. Honestly, many of the concepts here are simple, common sense things that I have definitely put into practice on a small scale, I just never had a formal name for it. It's great to see the concepts of user-centric approach throughout the planning, design, and development of a project being put into a formal, structured approach. Too often designers and business owners are so busy trying to make something cool and exciting that they totally forget that the website is nothing if users can't access it, don't understand it, or get turned off by the over-used design and wiz-bang elements employed.

For anyone starting out in web development, this book is a great way to learn how to design for the user experience. It is much more indepth than other books I've seen on the subject and could easily be used as an classroom book for UX Design 101.

If you work on project teams and with large companies this book is very helpful in outlining the approach to designing for the user experience. If your work is mostly for small projects, small websites, etc, this book may be overkill. However, this book will give you a very good and thorough understanding of how to design with the user in mind and this is something all web designers/developers need in know regardless of the size of the project. The overall concepts can be easily adapted and trimmed down for smaller projects.

I think all web designers should have a core understanding of UX Design and with this book the authors do an excellent of job of providing that.

The details and breakdown of this book are fantastic. This book is both helpful for those who need a general idea of how to approach UX design and those who want flesh, bone, and practical application. As a programming and web development student this was incredibly helpful supplementing my course work (as school curriculum are structured to be slow instead of following/begin ahead of the curve).

This book is a great resource for people new to UX Design. It is definitely introductory level. Most people already in this industry will not discover new information.

A great majority of the book covers the set-up of UX Design, as well as management techniques. It will literally show you how to book conference rooms, plan the process, get the equipment that you'll need, etc. There's not a ton of helpful information there, I found, especially as someone who has been in the industry for several years.

Another thing that I noticed with this book is that it's highly targeted to big projects. I'm talking large budgets, entire teams of specialists, etc. It's retail/commerce-specific, as well. If you're a designer who works on your own, or with primarily small businesses, you may not get as much out of this book as you hope.

All-in-all, it's a helpful book about UX Design. Beginners will get a lot out of it; there's definitely plenty of information to soak up.
