5.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe it works. But it does!
I'm a skeptic! I also like technology. I own a Dyson upright in addition to an in house vac. Have the latest LG frontloader washers to give you a flavor of my insane search for the latest and greatest stuff. This seems to be one of those products. I placed it by the litter box and a few hours later, nothing. I have to stick my nose inside the covered box to smell...

1.0 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me either
I bought the Smellkiller for a very small area containing a litter box. I have had it for several weeks and have kept water in it, but there has been no difference at all in the odor.

Let me get right to the point... it doesn't work. For those that claimed it did... maybe they just WANTED it to work so badly that they convinced themselves there was a difference? It didn't work in our smelly diaper room or in our kitchen, not even in the tiny cupboard where we keep the trash pail. We followed the directions precisely, even rereading the little booklet incase we missed something. The only reason we gave it one star is that we didn't have the option of giving it none.

I was impressed by all the 5-star reviews, and had also seen this product on HGTV, so I decided to give it a try. I placed it for 24 hours in a small bathroom with a litterbox, and found no difference. I gave it another try in the smallest place I could find: the kitchen compost pail. I left it for two days, and did not see a big difference in odor. I read the directioins carefully and made sure there was water in the bowl, but simply did not experience any noticeable difference. I really wanted this thing to work, but I just didn't see any results.

I placed it by the litter box and a few hours later, nothing. I have to stick my nose inside the covered box to smell the cat waste! Yuck! I placed it by a smelly wood stove, wham-o I have to stick my nose into the stove to detect the stench. If I were Glade or Airwick I would be pooping my pants (and not smelling it!) over the competetive threat! I'd like to see others review this unbelievable device to compare the results, but so far, I'm just in disbelive... So far so good. I've read it's initial discovery was an accident, kind of like the microwave!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well, I am beside myself, April 25, 2005
This review is from: Smellkiller Air Cleanser XL with Rubber Bowl (Kitchen)
I bought the smellkiller XL to deal with the daily smell of a cat box between cleanings. Here in Florida the humidity makes smells even worse, and I had gotten so fed up with every "long-lasting" claim of odor killers that I decided to take a risk and buy this thing. I arrived today, I paid $49.99 for it, read the directions and it said allow 5-6 hours to work the first time. So I placed it on top of the litter box lid, and prompty went about my evening. A short time later, maybe an hour or so, I entered the bath, and it hit me. NO SMELL. I am amazed, and will be buying more for other places in the house like the refridgerator.

4.0 out of 5 stars I think it makes a difference, December 29, 2006

I bought this item in October 2005, somewhere around when Amazon introduced it, I think. In February 2005 my cat had gotten into the living room during a week while we were on vacation, and he trashed the carpet. I had carpet cleaners out three times, applied various pet odor products several times (cannot recommend anything there), tore up parts of the padding and floor molding, and still believed I was smelling something. So, I was in despair and bought this product. Back then it sold for $18.99; I'm not sure I would spend the current amount of almost $50 for this (because I'm cheap plus I don't believe this is a permanent solution), but as long as I remember to keep water in this, I now rarely smell anything in the living room. It is imperative to keep it filled with water. The minute the water has evaporated, I notice the smell again. Also, I think it's doing something because there is such a scummy residue in the container once the water is gone. A nice feature is that all parts of this can go in the dishwasher for cleaning. Maybe this is all in my mind, but the bottom line is when I have this full of water, I don't smell anything in there, but once it's dry, back comes the smell. April 25, 2008 update: As an experiment, I have not filled up the cleanser for the past two months, and I don't notice any difference from when I was using it with water. At the current price of $69.95, I feel compelled to say this item isn't worth trying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, July 2, 2005

My daughter could always smell a "doggy" odor in my house from my older dog. My husband and I both currently smoke. Since we started using this product, she can smell nothing in my home but fresh air! It is absolutely amazing. Nothing can compare to it. Forget the air fresheners. I recommend this to anyone who smokes, has pets, or is worried about odors in their home. To me, this the wonder product of the century.

5.0 out of 5 stars works great!, July 29, 2005
This review is from: Smellkiller Air Cleanser XL with Rubber Bowl (Kitchen)
this thing seems to work great for me. i put it in an area where my dog has her training pads and the area remains odor free. it worked so well, i put it in the refridgerator to remove an odor there. after a day or two, i had to bring it back out because the smell of the training pad area started smell really badly again, reminding me how effective the smellkiller was.

also, after a few days, i can see a disgusting layer form on the top of the water, which i'm sure is the organic molecules collecting on the surface. even more grossly reassuring is that there is a slimy feel to the inside of the bowl when i clean it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works amazingly well!, August 7, 2006

I LOVE this product!!! I have cats and a father who works on helicopters so just imagine the smells we end up with in this house. All I do is fill up the smellkiller with water and within 2-3 hours the smells are gone, maybe not 100% but at least 90%. I highly recommend this product! Infact, after I bought my first smellkiller I came back and bought 5 more for other rooms and gifts, I love this product that much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Actually works, November 26, 2005

My wife & I were very skeptical of this but since it was recommended by a professional we trust, we figured we'd give it a shot.

We are quite happy (& surprised) to report that it actually works. We use it primarily in the kitchen and are impressed. It is not a magic solution--it is not going to eliminate all odors in 30 seconds--but it was a noticeable difference in "lingering" kitchen smells the next morning that aren't so pleasant.

The Smellkiller does not absolve you of having to clean your kitchen after cooking but it sure helps in getting rid of the after odors without having to use scented sprays. Well done!
