5.0 out of 5 stars Punk as Nirvana
Hey, As I was reading the reviews for this, I realized they were all biased.

A. This album is excellent, even if the songs are done in their own unique way. Nirvana's D-7 version didn't sound much like the Wipers now did it.

B. Even if the songs are different, it's done in Punk fashion. How many times do you hear a cover song that is done exactly the same as the...

Let's get one thing straight, Nirvana WAS a punk band. Kurt grew up listening to punk rock. His favorite band was the Sex Pistols for a time (his favorite bands otherwise were the Beatles and the Pixies), his first concert he went to was a Black Flag show, and Nirvana actually opened for DOA a few times (he and Courtney met at a DOA concert). Hey, As I was reading the reviews for this, I realized they were all biased.

B. Even if the songs are different, it's done in Punk fashion. How many times do you hear a cover song that is done exactly the same as the origional. What's the point in that.

C. Flipper (who covers Scentless Apprentice) was one of Kurts favorite bands and I think their version of the song is a very good rendition of it. I do not believe he would be rolling over in his grave.

D. Do not buy this if you want the sounds of the origional Nirvana. Only Buy this if you want some other band's take on a great song. There are only 2 pretty true versions to the origionals (Dive and On A Plain)... I think Smells Like Teen Spirt is exceptionally good myself.

Thank you

Let's get one thing straight, Nirvana WAS a punk band. Kurt grew up listening to punk rock. His favorite band was the Sex Pistols for a time (his favorite bands otherwise were the Beatles and the Pixies), his first concert he went to was a Black Flag show, and Nirvana actually opened for DOA a few times (he and Courtney met at a DOA concert). And in interviews, he would often claim that Nirvana was "just a punk band". Actually, some of the bands on here were bands he grew up listening to.

That said, this CD was probably more well intended than it is good. The Vibrators cover is too damn close to the original version, Flipper might as well have done one of their own songs because they sound just like Scentless Apprentice, and DOA sound more toungue-in-cheek than reverent (but Kurt probably would have liked it). Everything just sounds like your average punk tune, with nothing of Nirvana in them at all.

I think Nirvana should have punk tribute to them. Unfortunately, this isn't the one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smells like a great cd, June 1, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Smells Like Bleach: Tribute to Nirvana (Audio CD)
Rubbish??!! Did you actually listen to this cd? It's (in my opinion as a HUGE Nirvana fan) an amzing compilation of the best punk bands (Uk Subs and Flipper)playing a fair deal of Nirvana's best tracks what could go wrong? What youve got to realize is punk isnt ment to be perfect, quite the opposite, and this collection of covers is a great example of how punk is ment to sound and its definetly a worthy tribute to Nirvana. I think they chose the Artists very wisley as most of theese bands , especially Flipper, are bands that Nirvana's sound was inspired by, so to have theese bands cover Nirvana songs is a great privilege for the band and im sure krist and dave would want kurt to hear it. I think the songs themselves are filled with this fresh new edge, which is all it needs because the songs are great in themselves and its interesting to hear the way other bands would play them. Everything about this cd is the exact definitive of punk, and its not just some idiots speeding the song up with distortion (it would be if rancid were on it) its a group of hardened punks doing what they do best- ripping shreds out of your cd player becasue as ive said before punk is not ment to sound perfect and the very rauchus and powerful covers are a prime example of that. I am personally gonna worship this cd as soon as i can get my hands on it. By Shaun Evans a.k.a Hippy Jim P.s. I did not have time to sign in or whatever so the kids reveiw will have to do hope this makes people see how much they are missing out on a great cd.

3.0 out of 5 stars its OK, March 13, 2004
This review is from: Smells Like Bleach: Tribute to Nirvana (Audio CD)
Its Ok but not great, like the Cleopatra Records tribute to Metallica was. I had that one first, and then bought this one because they sort of go together. This is coming from a big Nirvana fan who's not a Metallica fan at all, too. The cuts in general are a bit uninspiring, although the disk has its high points. Deedee Ramone's "Negative Creep" is nowehere near as good as his "Jump In the Fire" on the other record is (RIP, Deedee). Same with Flipper. I think that perhaps even though the Nirvana material is good, it doesn't transfer as naturally to other bands as the Metallica stuff does. Too idiosyncratic. I may like Blanks 77 "Smells Like Teen Spirit" cover best. Overall, this baby is not gonna spend weeks on end in my 5-disk machine next to the Metallica trib, which has a nearly permanent spot. Next I'm gonna have to get the Cleopatra tribute to NOFX to add to this series. I don't know all their songs, but I partied with 'em back in '87!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD -- Happy 36th Kurdt, February 21, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Smells Like Bleach: Tribute to Nirvana (Audio CD)
I really dislike a lot of these reviews. First of all, calling these "bad punk bands" bad is an insult. They are all classic bands, which Nirvana was heavily influenced by. Also, most of these bands are/were Kurt's favorites, so he probably would've loved them. And here's my opinion:
There are two Nirvana fans: the ones who like Nirvana, as well as a bunch of "underground" bands like the Vaselines, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, the Pixies, Beat Happening, etc.

Then there are the 11 yr old mall trash kids who listen to Nirvana after listening to Slipknot or Limp Bizkit.

I like the CD, so whatever. Happy birthday Kurt, by the way.

Don't buy this .... The only 2 semi good songs on it are the ones by the UK Subs and Agent Orange, and that's if you compare it to any of the other ones. Don't waste your money, and get something worth wile. By the way, I'm a huge Nirvana fan, but I also like the UK Subs and I'm extreamly upset at the cover they did. I am so ashamed for being a fan of theres (UK Subs) at the moment. sad, sad, sad world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Punk Tribute, May 18, 2003
This review is from: Smells Like Bleach: Tribute to Nirvana (Audio CD)
Good album and great covers. UK subs cover of stay away is packed with power. Vice sqaud, Dr Know, Agent Orange, Flipper, and a very drugged up Dee Dee Ramone are the reasons to get this album.

If you like Nirvana and want to hear Classic punk bands do Nirvana covers the way they want to, buy this album. If you like Nirvana and want to hear bands that sound like Creed or Limp Bisquick do Nirvana covers exactly the way Nirvana did them, don't buy this album.

Remember this is a punk tribute, not a blink 182 tribute, and anyone who knows anything about punk covers knows that the bands usually RAPE the songs they cover. Which a few artists do here. Kurt would love it. So buy this if you want a good dirty punk tribute, if not, I'm sure your favorite top 40 bands will have one out soon.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tribute?, March 18, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Smells Like Bleach: Tribute to Nirvana (Audio CD)
These bands shouldn't even be allowed to play Nirvana songs. It sounds awful. Because of the version of Smells Like Teen Spirit on this CD, I will now have a distorted image every time I here the real song ever again. They really messed it up. There isn't one track I like on this whole "tribute".

5.0 out of 5 stars Punk tribute to semi-punk band = good., October 13, 2001
This review is from: Smells Like Bleach: Tribute to Nirvana (Audio CD)
The funny thing about a lot of Nirvana fans is that the don't even listen to punk. Kurt Cobain loved punk! He tried to make punk records! The U.K Subs are a great band. If they want to do a cover of someone let them.
